Chapter 8 - Eleanor’s Voice

Mark tried to refuse the phone search.

He failed.

Forensics got into it before dawn.

Deleted messages.

Financial records.

Voice notes.

And one recovered audio file from the night Eleanor collapsed.

Rowe found Arthur sitting alone in the study when he returned.

He didn’t sit down.

He simply held up the evidence tablet and said, “You should hear this before anyone else.”

Arthur took the tablet with both hands.

The recording was scratchy.

Then Eleanor’s voice came through.

Weak.

Breathless.

But unmistakably hers.

“Mark… what did you give me?”

Arthur shut his eyes.

He heard movement.

Then Mark’s voice.

“Stop fighting it. You’re making it worse.”

Then Claire.

Panicked. Younger. Less controlled.

“She looks wrong.”

Mark again.

“She’s fine. Go downstairs.”

Arthur’s hand shook violently now.

The audio continued.

A crash.

Labored breathing.

Then Eleanor again, barely audible.

“Arthur… don’t sign…”

The recording cut into static.

That was enough.

More than enough.

Arthur pressed one hand over his mouth and turned away.

All these months he had feared she died frightened.

Now he knew she had died warning him.

When he went back into the dining room, Claire looked up immediately.

She knew.

Not because anyone told her.

Because Arthur’s face had changed.

“Dad—”

“You left her there.”

Claire broke.

“I thought she’d wake up.”

Mark shouted from the far side of the room, “She could have called for help!”

The second the words left his mouth, Rowe looked at him sharply.

Alvarez did too.

Mark understood too late what he had admitted.

Knowledge.

Presence.

Responsibility.

Arthur looked at his daughter.

“Did you hear your mother ask for me?”

Claire sobbed.

“Yes.”

“And you still walked away?”

“I was scared.”

Arthur’s reply was quiet.

“So was she.”

That sentence shattered what little was left in the room.

Mark was arrested before sunrise.

Claire was not handcuffed immediately.

Not yet.

Because now the detectives wanted all of it.

And Claire, broken open by fear and betrayal, was the only person left who could explain how a daughter ended up at a table with poison in her father’s soup.

👉 Mark’s phone proved Eleanor had been silenced — but her final warning led Arthur to one last piece of evidence she had hidden for him before she died.
