Chapter 6 - The Money Mark Couldn’t Hide

Mark’s motive was not love.
It was debt.
Ugly, suffocating, desperate debt.
The forensic team pulled enough financial records that night to see the outline fast.
Private loans.
Bad investments.
Unauthorized transfers.
A string of hidden losses disguised through shell accounts and delayed reporting.
Mark had married into money and then treated access like permission.
He lost millions trying to look smarter than he was.
When the losses became impossible to cover, he started leaning on Claire.
At first it was small.
A signature.
A transfer.
A short-term bridge.
He framed each move as strategic.
Temporary.
Necessary.
Claire had always wanted more influence in her father’s world.
Mark fed that hunger.
He told her Arthur was never going to choose her.
He told her Eleanor quietly undermined her.
He told her she had a right to take what should have been hers.
By the time Claire realized how much money was gone, she was already involved enough to be afraid.
Then Eleanor noticed irregularities.
That made her dangerous.
If Arthur stayed fully in control, he would find them too.
If Arthur was declared incompetent, Claire could become his guardian.
If Claire became his guardian, Mark could control the company through her.
Simple.
Cruel.
Effective.
Until Arthur stopped behaving like prey.
In the study, Detective Alvarez read one recovered message aloud.
From Mark to Claire.
Board vote in four days. We need him visibly unstable first.
Arthur stood with one hand braced on the desk.
The words did not shock him anymore.
They arranged the horror into structure.
Claire had not wanted only power.
She had wanted recognition.
Mark had taken that wound and weaponized it.
When Rowe confronted Claire with the message, she looked at Mark in disbelief.
“You told me it was just to delay the board.”
Mark stared back.
“It was.”
Arthur laughed once.
It was not a warm sound.
“Then why was there a dosage chart in my kitchen?”
Mark looked at the detectives.
Then at Claire.
And Arthur suddenly understood something else.
Mark had kept records carefully enough to protect himself.
If this fell apart, Claire was supposed to fall harder.
Arthur saw it in the way Mark answered every question.
He minimized himself.
Expanded her role.
Shifted the weight toward her.
Claire saw it too.
Her face changed.
Slowly.
From shock.
To hurt.
Then to fear.
