Chapter 1 - The Soup He Refused to Drink

Claire poured the white powder into her father’s soup when she thought he wasn’t looking.

The penthouse dining room glowed in warm yellow light. Two bowls of soup sat on the table beside water glasses and a bouquet of white flowers. Beyond the black windows, Manhattan glittered below.

Arthur Bennett sat on the left side of the table in a dark blue sweater, his silver hair brushed neatly back, his eyes lowered toward the bowl in front of him.

Claire stood beside him in a beige sweater, her face calm, her movements quick.

Too quick.

She tore open a tiny silver packet with one sharp pull and dumped the powder straight into his soup.

Behind her, Mark stood near the kitchen island with a glass of wine in his hand, smiling the way people smile when they think something ugly is about to go their way.

Claire stirred once.

Then she slid the bowl closer to Arthur.

“Eat it, Dad.”

Arthur’s hand moved.

Not to the bowl.

To the spoon.

He slammed it onto the table so hard the water glass shivered.

Mark’s smile died.

Claire’s face tightened.

Arthur looked at his daughter for a long, silent moment.

His old hand trembled beside the soup.

But his face didn’t.

He pushed his chair back a few inches.

Claire bent closer, pretending tenderness, but her eyes were cold now. Urgent.

“Dad, please,” she said softly.

Arthur lifted the bowl with both hands.

Then he spoke in a low, steady voice.

“You first.”

Claire froze.

Her smile cracked.

Arthur calmly switched the bowls. He pushed his own soup in front of Claire and pulled hers toward himself.

Then his eyes drifted downward.

The empty silver packet sat half-hidden beneath Claire’s napkin.

Arthur looked at it.

Then he lifted his eyes to the dark window behind her.

In the reflection, a small security camera blinked in the upper corner.

Claire followed his gaze.

The color drained from her face.

Arthur said, “Smile. The camera saw you.”

Out in the quiet hallway, two detectives in dark suits stood by the elevator. One watched the live feed on his phone.

On the screen, Claire slowly lowered herself into the chair in front of the poisoned bowl.

The older detective touched his radio.

“Move now.”

Back in the dining room, Claire’s hand shook as she lifted the spoon.

Mark rushed forward behind her, trying to grab the bowl.

Arthur’s palm came down hard on the rim and stopped him.

Claire swallowed a tiny mouthful.

Then she coughed violently, grabbed her throat, and stared at Arthur in pure panic.

Mark dropped his wine glass.

It shattered across the floor.

A hard knock exploded at the front door.

Arthur didn’t turn his head.

He looked only at his daughter.

“Now tell them what you put in it.”

May you like

The handle began to turn.

👉 But the detectives weren’t outside because of one bowl of soup. They were there because Arthur had been pretending to lose his mind for months.
