Chapter 5 - THE PHOTOGRAPH FROM ROSEBRIDGE

Brandon insisted Denise had left voluntarily.
“She panicked,” he said. “She probably realized she had violated medical privacy.”
“Then why is her phone on the floor?”
“She dropped it.”
“Why did the power fail?”
“A breaker tripped.”
“Why is the ladle gone?”
Vanessa wiped soup from the cabinet with a fresh towel.
“You hid it.”
I looked at her.
She no longer seemed angry.
She seemed energized.
That frightened me more.
Some people became reckless after losing control. Vanessa became precise.
She had wanted me frightened and confused. The darkness gave her a chance to remove what mattered.
But she had forgotten my phone was still recording.
I checked the video.
The screen had gone almost black during the power failure, but the microphone continued capturing sound.
There was the scrape of Vanessa’s slippers.
Denise whispering, “Get away from me.”
A man’s voice near the front door saying, “Take her through the garage.”
Not Brandon.
Someone else had been inside or immediately outside the house.
I replayed it once.
Brandon heard the voice and looked toward Vanessa.
She did not look surprised.
“You knew someone was coming,” I said.
“No.”
“Who took Denise?”
“No one took her.”
My phone vibrated.
A photograph arrived from an unknown number.
Denise sat in a vinyl chair beneath harsh fluorescent lights. Her hands were not visible. Her eyes were wide, and a bruise darkened one side of her face.
Behind her was a wall sign bearing the Rosebridge logo.
Across her lap lay the missing ladle.
The text beneath the photograph read:
YOUR WITNESS HAS ALREADY EXPLAINED WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.
Another image followed.
It showed a typed statement bearing Denise’s signature.
According to the statement, she had witnessed me strike myself with the ladle, threaten Vanessa with the cast-iron pot, and suffer a paranoid episode.
The signature looked unsteady.
I forwarded both images to the hidden contact who had warned me about Brandon.
The contact replied immediately.
KEEP THEM TALKING. I’M SAVING EVERYTHING OFF-SITE.
Brandon saw the message preview.
“Who are you sending things to?”
“My insurance agent.”
“You don’t have an insurance agent.”
“I have many things you don’t know about.”
Vanessa smiled coldly.
“Is that supposed to scare us?”
“No.”
It was the truth.
I was beyond wanting to scare them.
I wanted them confident enough to continue exposing themselves.
Brandon walked toward me.
“Mom, let’s stop. Give me the phone. Vanessa will apologize. We’ll get your forehead treated.”
Vanessa’s head snapped toward him.
“I will not apologize.”
“You hit her.”
“She deserved it.”
The words landed between them.
Brandon’s face tightened.
He had been trying to repair the story. Vanessa had just shattered it.
I raised the phone slightly.
“Say that again.”
She stepped toward me.
Brandon caught her arm.
This time, his panic was real.
“Stop talking.”
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she began to laugh.
“You think the phone matters? By tomorrow, she won’t even be legally competent to own it.”
Brandon went pale.
She had revealed something he did not want me to hear.
“What happens tomorrow?” I asked.
Neither answered.
I looked toward the cracked phone Denise left behind.
Its screen lit up with a notification.
A voicemail had arrived during the four-second call to Dr. Vale.
I pressed play.
Denise’s breathless voice whispered, “Stephen, they changed the date. Don’t sign anything. Brandon’s wife has the original—”
A door slammed in the recording.
Then Dr. Vale answered from the other end.
“I already signed it, Denise.”
The voicemail continued after he thought the call had ended.
Dr. Vale spoke to someone in his office.
