Chapter 11 - THE BACKUP PHONE IN MY APRON

We left the house together.
Not because I trusted Brandon.
Because Denise had seventeen minutes.
Lillian drove the black SUV. Vanessa sat beside her. Brandon and I were in the back seat.
They believed my smartphone rested inside Lillian’s leather folder.
It did.
What they did not know was that the phone contained only the visible recording from the kitchen.
My backup phone remained hidden inside a second pocket sewn into my apron.
Edward taught me to sew concealed pockets when we traveled. He said hotel safes gave people false confidence.
For years, the pocket held tissues or emergency cash.
Tonight, it held every recording I had made over three months.
It also transmitted our location to Rachel’s automated account.
I kept my hands folded over my lap while streetlights moved across the windows.
Blood had dried beside my eye.
No one offered medical care.
Vanessa turned in her seat.
“When we arrive, you will tell Dr. Vale that you attacked me during a confused episode.”
“No.”
Lillian watched me through the rearview mirror.
“You will, because Denise’s medication begins in nine minutes.”
Brandon leaned forward.
“Stop threatening people.”
Vanessa looked at him with disgust.
“Your weakness created this entire problem.”
“My weakness?”
“You couldn’t control one old woman.”
The phrase entered me quietly.
Control one old woman.
That was how they understood my existence.
Not as a person.
As an obstacle that should have been manageable.
Brandon glanced toward my apron.
Only once.
But Vanessa noticed.
Her eyes narrowed.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
She continued watching him.
Then she reached over the seat and searched my outer pocket.
It was empty.
“Where’s the other phone?”
My heart stopped.
Brandon stared out the window.
He had told her.
Perhaps earlier.
Perhaps months ago.
The warning message after the ladle strike returned to me:
DON’T LET BRANDON TOUCH THE PHONE. HE ALREADY KNOWS ABOUT THE OTHER RECORDINGS.
I had assumed he knew recordings existed.
He knew the device.
Vanessa grabbed my apron.
“Give it to me.”
I slapped her hand away.
It was the first time I had struck back.
Not hard.
Not violently.
But decisively.
Her mouth opened in shock.
Lillian swerved toward the shoulder.
Brandon caught Vanessa’s arm as she lunged across the seat.
“Leave her alone!”
“You told me she had a backup!”
“I told you months ago because you said she might be recording private conversations.”
“You knew,” I said.
He looked at me.
“Mom—”
“You searched my room.”
“I thought you were spying on us.”
“You were abusing me.”
“I didn’t know what Vanessa was planning.”
“You knew enough to hide it.”
The SUV stopped beside a dark service road three miles from Rosebridge.
Lillian locked the doors.
“Find the phone.”
Vanessa twisted toward me.
Brandon restrained her again, but she drove her elbow into his chest and reached across his body.
I pressed myself against the door.
The backup phone continued recording beneath the fabric.
Then headlights appeared behind us.
A white medical transport van pulled close.
Dr. Vale stepped out.
Two large attendants followed him.
One opened my door using a key Lillian had already provided.
They dragged me from the SUV.
Brandon shouted, but Vanessa pinned his arm against the seat while Lillian locked him inside.
Dr. Vale seized my wrist.
“Where is the device?”
“I don’t know.”
He searched the outside of my apron.
His hand passed over the hidden seam.
For one second, I thought the pocket would hold.
Then Brandon began pounding against the window.
“Inside the left hem!” he shouted.
Dr. Vale tore the stitching open.
The backup phone fell into his hand.
My son had betrayed me again.
But as Vale looked at the glowing screen, his face changed.
The phone was not displaying the recordings.
It showed an active call.
Someone had been listening for the past fourteen minutes.
A woman’s voice came through the speaker.
