Chapter 10 - THE CONFESSION THEY WROTE FOR BRANDON

Vanessa removed a folded document from inside her sweater.
She had carried it against her body throughout the confrontation.
The title read VOLUNTARY STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY.
Brandon’s name appeared beneath it.
The statement claimed he alone had engineered my false medical history, forged Edward’s affidavit, transferred the house, coerced Denise, and arranged Helen’s impersonation.
Vanessa and Lillian were described as innocent family members who trusted him.
“You planned to blame me,” he said.
Vanessa did not deny it.
“You were careless enough to make it believable.”
His hands trembled.
“I never met Helen.”
“You sent her copies of Margaret’s ID.”
“You told me they were for the insurance company.”
“You gave Dr. Vale her medical records.”
“You said Mom needed care.”
“You signed the deed.”
“You said Mom approved it.”
Each answer buried him deeper.
Vanessa had turned his indifference into evidence.
She did not need to fabricate everything.
She only needed to arrange the real pieces so they pointed toward him.
I felt no satisfaction watching him panic.
He had allowed my food to be withheld, my medication changed, my bedroom searched, and my name dragged through medical files.
But he was still my son.
That was the most painful truth: love does not disappear simply because the person receiving it becomes undeserving.
Lillian pushed the confession toward him.
“Sign, and your mother enters Rosebridge quietly. Denise and Rachel go home. Vanessa leaves the country. You cooperate with investigators and receive consideration.”
“What happens to you?”
“I was never here.”
My phone continued recording.
Lillian seemed unconcerned because she believed she would obtain it before leaving.
Then Dr. Vale sent a video.
Denise sat strapped to a treatment chair. A clear IV bag hung beside her. Rachel was visible behind a glass door, pounding against it.
Vale stood between them wearing a white coat.
“If Margaret does not arrive in thirty minutes,” he said, “Denise will receive medication documented under Margaret’s identity.”
The implications were immediate.
If Denise died or became incapacitated, the records would show that I received the medication.
The substitute patient allowed them to move my identity between bodies.
An injury could become mine.
A crime could become mine.
A death could become mine.
Brandon sank onto the sofa.
“We should call the police.”
Vanessa laughed.
“With what story? Your mother struck herself, threatened us with a pot, abducted an evaluator, and created paranoid recordings?”
“My video shows you hitting me,” I said.
“Your phone shows what we allow it to show after we take it.”
She moved toward me.
This time, Brandon stood between us.
“Don’t.”
Vanessa’s expression became almost tender.
“You finally chose her.”
“No,” he said. “I’m choosing not to go to prison for you.”
There it was.
Not love.
Self-preservation.
Still, it altered the balance.
Lillian glanced toward the clock.
“We are wasting time.”
My hidden contact account flashed from another device.
Rachel had apparently activated an automatic file transfer before Dr. Vale caught her.
A folder labeled ROSEBRIDGE INTERNAL appeared in my cloud storage.
Inside were admission logs, medication orders, and security schedules.
One document listed twelve elderly patients who had entered Rosebridge under false names over seven years.
Six died.
Their properties were later sold through trusts connected to Lillian.
This was larger than my house.
Larger than my family.
Vanessa had not invented the plan for me.
She had inherited a business model.
Then I found Denise’s scheduled medication order.
The drug combination could stop her breathing within minutes.
Administration time: 8:15 P.M.
The kitchen clock showed 7:58.
Seventeen minutes.
At the bottom of the order was a digital authorization from Dr. Vale.
Below his signature appeared another approval.
BRANDON WHITMORE, LEGAL GUARDIAN.
