Chapter 13 - THE PHOTOGRAPH BEFORE THEIR FIRST DATE

Denise survived the medication.

Paramedics stabilized her on the roadside while officers searched for Vanessa, Dr. Vale, and Lillian.

I sat on the rear step of an ambulance with a bandage pressed to my forehead.

Brandon stood twenty feet away under police supervision.

He kept looking at me.

I looked at Denise.

“What did you mean?”

Her words came slowly.

“Rosebridge has archived visitor logs. I saw Brandon’s name from four years ago.”

Brandon and Vanessa claimed they met three years earlier at a charity dinner.

He brought her home six months later.

I remembered how easily she entered our family, how quickly she learned Edward’s favorite meals, my medication schedule, and the details of our property.

I mistook preparation for attentiveness.

Denise swallowed.

“Brandon visited Rosebridge with Vanessa and Dr. Vale before their first public date.”

Detective Ruiz arrived in an unmarked sedan.

She was a compact woman in her fifties with gray threaded through her dark hair. Rachel had contacted her weeks earlier after discovering irregular requests for my estate files.

Ruiz knelt beside Denise.

“Did you see why they met?”

“Patient conversion program.”

“What does that mean?”

“Replacing property owners with controlled identities. Helen handled signatures. Vanessa recruited families. Brandon provided personal records.”

Brandon shouted from the patrol car.

“That’s not true!”

An officer told him to remain quiet.

Denise continued.

“There’s a photograph in Vale’s office. Brandon, Vanessa, and Lillian standing outside Whitmore Manufacturing.”

Edward’s old office.

My husband had owned a small precision-metal company before retirement. He produced specialty parts for hospitals, laboratories, and government contractors.

After he died, Brandon sold the company’s remaining equipment.

Or told me he had.

“Why were they there?” I asked.

Denise closed her eyes.

“I don’t know.”

Detective Ruiz showed me a file recovered from the broken backup phone’s cloud sync.

It contained the photograph Denise described.

Brandon stood younger and heavier beside Vanessa. Lillian was behind them. The date stamp showed the image was taken four years earlier.

Through the office window, a fourth figure was visible.

Dr. Vale.

They were holding Edward’s old red ledger.

I knew that ledger.

Edward used it to record prototype serial numbers by hand because he distrusted digital inventory systems. After his death, it disappeared from his desk.

Brandon told me it had been discarded with outdated paperwork.

“What did Edward manufacture for Rosebridge?” Ruiz asked.

“Nothing that I knew of.”

She enlarged the ledger image.

One visible line read: RC-14 RESTRAINT CONTROL / MANUAL OVERRIDE KEY.

Rosebridge used electronic locks and treatment-chair restraints.

Edward may have discovered that his components were being used to imprison victims.

Perhaps that was why he kept the ledger.

Perhaps that was why Vanessa targeted our family long before she entered the house.

Ruiz faced Brandon.

“Tell us what the ledger contains.”

“I don’t know.”

“You were photographed holding it.”

“Vanessa said it documented assets Mom forgot to probate.”

“You met her before your first date.”

He looked toward me.

“I was in debt.”

The answer came out almost inaudibly.

His consulting firm had been failing. He owed money to private lenders. Vanessa offered to clear it if he helped locate Edward’s records.

“I thought she was investigating hidden accounts,” he said.

“You gave her access to me.”

“I didn’t know she would hurt you.”

“You knew she ran Rosebridge.”

“I knew her family invested in it.”

“You knew they replaced people’s identities.”

“No.”

Denise lifted her head from the stretcher.

“You attended the conversion meeting.”

Brandon’s face collapsed.

Ruiz opened another recovered audio file.

It was dated four years earlier.

Brandon’s voice said, “My mother trusts me. Once I move back into the house, I can get the medical records and deed.”

Vanessa answered, “And when she signs?”

“If she won’t, we make sure she no longer counts as herself.”

My son closed his eyes.

Before anyone could respond, Detective Ruiz’s radio crackled.

Rosebridge staff had evacuated the facility.

Rachel and Helen were gone.

Security footage showed Vanessa entering through a rear gate twelve minutes earlier.

She was carrying the red ledger.

And she had taken Denise’s hospital badge, which granted access to the medication storage wing where eight sedated elderly patients remained locked inside.
