Chapter 9 - The Signature on the Marble

Vanessa’s forged trustee document still lacked Margaret’s signature.

Caleb had already found a buyer willing to purchase the mansion below market value and move money through an overseas account.

The buyer believed Vanessa controlled the property.

The closing was scheduled for the following week.

“We need the signature today,” Caleb said.

Vanessa placed the document on the foyer table.

Margaret read it carefully.

It transferred all trust authority to Vanessa.

Once signed, Vanessa could sell the property, close Margaret’s residence rights and remove Ethan as future beneficiary.

“I will never sign this.”

Vanessa leaned across the table.

“Ethan lost his company.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know he hasn’t sent money.”

“He has never measured his life by what he sends you.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You think he’ll choose you after everything I’ve done for him?”

Margaret looked around the house.

“What have you done except spend what he earned?”

Vanessa struck the table with the mop handle.

“Sign.”

Margaret pushed the paper away.

Vanessa tipped the cleaning bucket across the marble.

Water spread beneath the chandelier.

“You’ll clean every inch. When your hands hurt enough, we’ll try again.”

Margaret’s knees trembled.

She considered shouting through the hidden camera.

But she did not know whether anyone was watching.

Vanessa forced her down.

“You can spend the rest of your life in a state facility,” she whispered. “No pension. No house. No son.”

Margaret began wiping the floor.

Each movement burned through her wrists.

Vanessa stood over her, rehearsing what she would tell Ethan.

His mother had become aggressive.

His mother had fallen while cleaning by choice.

His mother needed professional placement.

Vanessa would cry.

She would say she had done everything possible.

Ethan would be too exhausted and financially broken to investigate.

Then a car stopped outside.

Vanessa checked the window.

The driver was unloading a navy suitcase covered in bright ribbons.

She smiled.

“He’s home.”

Margaret looked toward the door.

Fear and hope collided inside her.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Say one word and I’ll tell him you attacked me.”

The lock turned.

Ethan entered.

The lie Vanessa had prepared disappeared the moment he saw Margaret’s knees on the marble.

👉 Ethan had returned before Vanessa could hide the scene, and his silence frightened her more than anger ever could.
