Chapter 10 - How Long?

Ethan walked across the foyer without removing his coat.

Vanessa began speaking immediately.

“Thank God you’re home. Your mother has been impossible.”

He ignored her.

He helped Margaret stand and guided her toward the bench near the staircase.

Her hands shook.

Her face was thinner than when he left.

“Mom, look at me.”

She tried.

Shame lowered her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

The word broke him.

“You have nothing to apologize for.”

Vanessa placed the mop against the wall.

“She spilled water. I asked her to help clean it because she refuses to do anything for herself.”

Ethan gently lifted Margaret’s sleeve.

The bruises were dark enough to reveal the shape of fingers.

“How long?”

Margaret looked toward Vanessa.

Ethan followed her eyes.

“How long has she been hurting you?”

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“Hurt her? Ethan, your mother bruises if someone touches her.”

He opened the security application.

Vanessa watched herself appear on the screen.

Her face lost color.

Ethan played the clip in which she pulled Margaret toward the bucket.

Then the clip of the pension card.

Then the clip of her saying:

Ethan will come home with nothing. He’ll need me more than he needs you.

Vanessa grabbed for the phone.

Ethan stepped back.

Margaret leaned against him.

“You saw it?”

“I should have seen it sooner.”

The doorbell rang.

Vanessa looked toward the glass doors.

Samuel stood outside with Detective Elena Ortiz and two uniformed officers.

Ethan opened the suitcase.

Red tea boxes and wrapped gifts shifted aside.

The legal folder lay beneath them.

Vanessa saw the eight-million-dollar figure on the share contract.

Her mouth opened.

“You sold the company?”

“My shares.”

“You told me the deal might fail.”

“It didn’t.”

She looked toward the deed.

Ethan removed it.

The owner was listed as the Margaret Carter Family Residence Trust.

Vanessa’s name appeared nowhere.

“This was never your house.”

She backed away.

“You can’t throw me out of my marital home.”

Samuel entered.

“It is not marital property. Your right to occupy it depended on the trust’s permission.”

Margaret looked at Vanessa with tears still in her eyes.

“I withdraw that permission.”

Detective Ortiz stepped forward.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to discuss the pension withdrawals and the footage.”

Vanessa pointed at Margaret.

“She gave me the card.”

Margaret finally raised her head.

“No. You took it.”

👉 Vanessa lost her claim to the house in one sentence, but the police search uncovered evidence that she had planned to steal far more than Margaret’s pension.
