Chapter 6 - The Rules of Vanessa’s House
Vanessa wrote the new rules on a sheet of paper and taped them to Margaret’s bedroom door.
No food outside scheduled meals.
No phone calls without permission.
No visitors.
No access to the study.
Household chores must be completed before television or rest.
Margaret tore the page down.
Vanessa replaced it.
“You are not my employee.”
“Employees get paid.”
Margaret looked at her pension card.
“Apparently, you do.”
Vanessa slapped the card against her own palm.
“This barely covers what you cost.”
Margaret’s hip worsened without physical therapy.
Her hands swelled from arthritis.
Vanessa still forced her to dust stairs, polish silverware and scrub bathroom tile.
The tasks were not about cleanliness.
The mansion already had weekly cleaners.
They were about obedience.
Vanessa began filming Margaret struggling and sending clips to Caleb.
In one video, she laughed while Margaret tried to lift a full laundry basket.
Caleb replied:
Get the trust signature and we’re done.
Another message read:
Ethan’s finished. Don’t waste time feeling guilty.
Vanessa wanted the mansion transferred before Ethan returned.
She believed he would be too ashamed of his business failure to resist her.
She also believed Margaret would never tell him the complete truth.
“Your son will choose his wife,” Vanessa said. “He always has.”
Margaret did not answer.
That sentence hurt because part of her feared it might be true.
Then Mrs. Evelyn Brooks, an elderly neighbor, saw Margaret through the garden fence.
Margaret was hanging wet sheets with shaking arms.
Evelyn called across the hedge.
“Where is Rosa?”
Vanessa appeared immediately.
“She retired.”
Margaret tried to speak.
Vanessa gripped her elbow.
“Mother is tired. We’re going inside.”
Evelyn noticed the bruises.
That evening, she called Ethan’s attorney, Samuel Brooks—her nephew.
Samuel reviewed the trust records and attempted to contact Margaret.
Vanessa answered her phone.
“She’s sleeping.”
“Have her call me.”
“She’s too confused for legal conversations.”
Samuel heard Margaret say clearly in the background:
“I’m not confused.”
The call ended.
Samuel’s suspicion became alarm.
He accessed the trust’s financial monitoring system.
Margaret’s pension withdrawals had increased dramatically.
A document naming Vanessa trustee had been uploaded but not executed.
Samuel sent a warning to Ethan.
The message never arrived.
Vanessa had gained access to Ethan’s personal email months earlier.
