Chapter 7 - The Camera She Thought Was Dead
The visible foyer camera stopped working on a Tuesday afternoon.
Vanessa climbed onto a chair and disconnected it.
She looked directly into the lens before pulling the wire.
“You won’t need this anymore.”
Margaret watched from the stairs.
Vanessa believed the house was finally blind.
She did not know that a second lens was hidden inside the motion sensor above the chandelier controls.
The backup system had been installed after burglars targeted Ethan’s previous home.
It operated independently.
Every recording uploaded automatically to an encrypted account managed by Samuel’s security firm.
That evening, Vanessa ordered Margaret to clean the marble floor.
“It was polished yesterday.”
“I can see streaks.”
“My hip is hurting.”
“Then crawl.”
Margaret refused.
Vanessa grabbed her pension card from the counter.
“I’ll empty the account.”
“You already stole most of it.”
“Prove it.”
Margaret reached for the card.
Vanessa shoved her hand away.
Margaret lost her balance and struck one knee against the floor.
She did not fall hard, but pain spread through her leg.
Vanessa placed the cleaning cloth beside her.
“Since you’re already down there.”
Margaret looked toward the disconnected camera.
She believed no one would ever see what happened.
Still, she refused to beg.
Vanessa pulled her by the wrist and positioned her beside the bucket.
The hidden camera recorded the bruising grip.
It recorded the threats.
It recorded Vanessa saying Ethan would return “with an empty suitcase and no authority.”
Margaret began cleaning because she feared another fall.
For five days, Vanessa repeated the punishment.
The marble had to be washed every morning.
If Margaret moved too slowly, Vanessa poured more water.
If she stopped, Vanessa removed her dinner.
On the sixth day, Margaret noticed a tiny light inside the motion sensor.
Frank had once shown her the backup cameras after installation.
She realized the system might still be active.
Margaret looked directly toward it.
Then she whispered:
“Samuel, please find Ethan.”
The camera had no live monitor.
But the words were stored.
