Chapter 9 - THE BRIDE’S ARRIVAL

On the wedding morning, Vanessa woke inside the hotel’s bridal suite.
Her phone had been collected by Camille to prevent “bad energy” from reaching her.
That was Gloria’s idea.
It also prevented Vanessa from seeing the cancellation messages circulating among the guests.
Hair stylists arrived.
Makeup artists worked.
Photographers took carefully framed pictures that avoided the empty hotel corridors.
Vanessa asked why the building seemed quiet.
“The guests are using the private entrance,” Gloria said.
Camille fastened the lace gown.
The same gown Vanessa wore when she pushed Ruth.
Gloria opened the leather document case.
Inside were the forged medical report, the Family Unity Agreement, the power of attorney, and a revised trust schedule.
“You’ll sign after the ceremony,” she said.
“Daniel won’t hesitate?”
“He watched you push his mother and still continued the wedding.”
Vanessa smiled at her reflection.
“He will always choose the path that protects his reputation.”
Across the hotel, Daniel stood beside Ruth in a private conference room.
He wore a dark suit, not a tuxedo.
Ruth wore deep blue with her wrist brace visible.
She looked at him.
“Are you ready?”
“No.”
“Good. Only foolish people feel comfortable ending a life they thought they wanted.”
“I should have seen her sooner.”
“You saw what she showed you.”
“You warned me.”
“And eventually you listened.”
Daniel glanced toward the chapel monitor.
Vanessa had entered the corridor.
Detective Bennett’s team took position.
The company directors and former Harbor Care victims watched from the adjacent ballroom.
Miriam Holt sat in the front row gripping her daughter’s hand.
Agnes Cole’s son had brought boxes of records from his mother’s case.
For them, the ceremony was not entertainment.
It was the moment a pattern finally became visible.
The chapel doors opened.
Vanessa entered alone because Gloria and Camille had gone ahead to place the document case beside the altar.
No music played.
Vanessa stepped onto the aisle.
The chairs were empty.
Her smile slowly disappeared.
“Daniel?”
The screen above the altar illuminated.
The fitting-room footage began.
Ruth fell.
Her cane slid away.
Vanessa’s recorded voice echoed through the chapel.
Get up and hold my gown.
Vanessa stopped walking.
The video continued.
You’re here to serve me.
Gloria rushed toward the control booth.
A security officer blocked her.
Camille grabbed the leather case.
Detective Bennett stepped from behind the altar.
“Place the case on the floor.”
Vanessa turned toward the doors.
Two officers stood there.
Then Daniel appeared in the hallway beside Ruth.
“You should’ve treated her better.”
Vanessa’s shock became rage.
“You humiliated me in front of everyone!”
Daniel looked around the empty chapel.
“There is no audience here.”
The doors to the adjacent ballroom opened.
The people watching began entering quietly.
Not wedding guests.
Witnesses.
Victims.
Company directors.
Investigators.
Vanessa saw Miriam Holt.
For the first time, Gloria looked truly afraid.
