Chapter 1 - THE EMPTY AISLE

Vanessa Cross shoved Ruth Whitmore so hard that the seventy-four-year-old woman struck the marble floor on her left hip.

Ruth’s cane skidded beneath a rack of white wedding gowns.

Her silver hair fell across her face. One hand clutched her wrist as pain shot up her arm.

Vanessa stood over her in a lace wedding dress.

“Get up and hold my gown.”

Her mother, Gloria, watched from a velvet chair with a glass of champagne.

Vanessa’s younger sister, Camille, laughed beneath her breath.

“You’re making everything about you again,” Vanessa snapped. “Daniel is marrying me. You’re here to serve me.”

Ruth tried to push herself upright.

The fitting-room door opened.

Daniel stood there in a navy suit.

He had seen everything.

For one second, Vanessa’s face showed fear.

Then she smiled.

“Your mother lost her balance.”

Daniel crossed the room without answering. He picked up Ruth’s cane, knelt beside her, and carefully supported her injured wrist.

“Can you move your fingers, Mom?”

“A little.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“We are already behind schedule.”

Daniel looked at the woman he was supposed to marry in twelve days.

He did not shout.

He did not accuse her.

He smiled.

It was the coldest smile Ruth had ever seen on her gentle son’s face.

“Of course,” he said. “Let’s not ruin the wedding.”

Vanessa relaxed.

She believed she had won.

Daniel helped Ruth stand, then squeezed her hand twice.

It was the signal he had used since childhood.

Trust me.

In the corner of the fitting room, a security camera blinked red.

The entire attack had been recorded.

Twelve days later, Vanessa arrived at St. Catherine’s Chapel wearing the same gown.

She expected two hundred guests.

She expected music, flowers, cameras, and Daniel waiting at the altar.

The chapel was empty.

No guests.

No bridesmaids.

No groom.

Only a large screen glowing above the altar.

Vanessa stopped halfway down the aisle.

The fitting-room video began playing.

Her own voice filled the chapel.

You’re here to serve me.

Her face turned white.

Two security officers stepped into position near the doors.

Vanessa spun around.

Daniel stood in the rain-darkened hallway beside Ruth, who leaned on her cane with her wrist still in a brace.

“You should’ve treated her better,” Daniel said.

Gloria and Camille appeared behind Vanessa carrying a leather document case they had planned to present at the reception.

Police officers approached them from both sides.

Vanessa looked from the screen to Daniel.

“You cannot do this to me.”

Daniel’s expression did not change.

“I didn’t do this.”

He glanced at the video.

“You did.”

An officer opened the leather case.

Inside were Ruth’s forged medical records, an unsigned power of attorney, and a transfer agreement worth more than sixty million dollars.

Vanessa had not come to the chapel only to become Daniel’s wife.

She had come to take legal control of his mother.
