Chapter 6 - THE DRESSING ROOM

The bridal salon occupied the ground floor of a luxury hotel owned by Whitmore Heritage.
Daniel arranged for its security cameras to remain active.
Vanessa assumed she controlled the appointment.
She invited Gloria, Camille, and three friends.
Ruth arrived wearing a lavender suit and carrying her cane.
She had considered refusing.
Then Daniel squeezed her hand before she entered.
“Stay near the camera.”
“You sound like your father.”
“He learned strategy from you.”
Inside, Vanessa emerged wearing a lace gown with a long train.
Everyone applauded.
Ruth said nothing.
Vanessa turned toward her.
“Well?”
“It is beautiful.”
“That sounded painful.”
“I was speaking about the dress.”
Gloria laughed.
Champagne flowed.
The seamstress pinned the hem while Camille took photographs.
When the seamstress left to retrieve another veil, Vanessa ordered Ruth to hold the train.
“My wrist is sore.”
“You hold a cane with it.”
“The cane supports me. Your dress does not.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You have made every part of this engagement miserable.”
“I questioned forged documents.”
“You questioned me.”
“I protected my family.”
“I am your family now.”
“Not yet.”
The room became quiet.
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“Daniel will marry me because canceling would humiliate him.”
Ruth looked toward the camera.
Vanessa followed her eyes but did not notice the small red light.
“He wants peace,” Vanessa continued. “Men like Daniel always choose peace over difficult mothers.”
Gloria smiled into her champagne.
Ruth answered calmly.
“Peace purchased with silence is only surrender.”
Vanessa seized her shoulder.
“Get up and hold my gown.”
“I am already standing.”
Vanessa pushed.
Ruth’s cane slipped.
Her hip struck the marble.
Pain tore through her wrist.
Vanessa bent over her.
“You will not embarrass me at my wedding.”
The door opened.
Daniel stood there.
He had arrived early after receiving a silent alert from the salon manager.
Ruth saw shock in his face.
Then guilt.
Then something colder.
He crossed the room and helped her.
Vanessa began explaining.
Daniel never looked at her while he checked Ruth’s wrist.
“Of course,” he said quietly. “Let’s not ruin the wedding.”
Gloria exchanged a relieved glance with Camille.
They believed Daniel had chosen appearance over his mother.
Ruth felt him squeeze her hand twice.
Trust me.
An ambulance took Ruth to the hospital through the hotel’s service entrance so Vanessa’s guests would not see.
The X-ray showed a fractured wrist and severe bruising along her hip.
Detective Bennett collected the video.
Samantha obtained an emergency protective order.
Daniel sat beside Ruth’s hospital bed until morning.
“I should have stopped this weeks ago.”
Ruth looked at her cast.
“You are stopping it now.”
“No more pretending.”
“Yes,” she said. “One more time.”
The wedding was twelve days away.

And Vanessa’s family still believed the reception would place Ruth’s fortune under their control.
👉 Vanessa thought Daniel’s calm response proved he was weak—but he was quietly turning her dream wedding into a controlled legal trap.
