Chapter 7 - The Groom Who Started Reading

Grant did not shout.

That made it worse for Vanessa.

He read.

Page after page.

The ballroom stayed frozen around him.

The band had stopped playing.

The waiters stood near the walls, uncertain whether to clear plates or witness a crime.

Grant turned to his general counsel, who had quietly entered through the side doors with another officer.

“Is this verified?”

The attorney nodded.

“Most of it. The rest is why the officers are here.”

Vanessa let out a harsh laugh.

“Most of it? So now you’re letting some bitter dropout destroy our wedding with paperwork?”

Lena’s mother whispered, “Vanessa.”

Vanessa ignored her.

“She was always like this. Quiet. Strange. Acting like suffering made her special.”

Lena’s fingers tightened around the file, but her face stayed calm.

Grant looked up.

“Enough.”

Vanessa’s mouth snapped shut.

It was the first time all day he sounded like a man who owned his name.

He turned to Lena.

“Did my company know your family connection before hiring your firm?”

“Yes. I disclosed it.”

“And legal approved your involvement because of the legacy rights?”

“Yes.”

“And Vanessa used that same legacy reference to authorize wedding-related discounts and back-end charges?”

Lena nodded.

“Yes.”

Grant turned to Vanessa.

“Did you know Lena held Rose Hart’s client rights?”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“That old woman was confused.”

Lena’s eyes flashed.

“She was sharp enough to catch you stealing.”

Richard stepped in fast.

“Grant, this is family history. It has nothing to do with you.”

Grant looked at him.

“My company paid invoices tied to your family’s forged authorizations.”

Richard went silent.

Grant’s attorney handed him another sheet.

“This is the internal alert that triggered the investigation.”

Grant read it.

Then looked at Vanessa.

His face went colder.

“Vanessa, why did your planner request all vendor records tied to Lena Hart be deleted after final payment?”

The entire room shifted.

That was the line guests would repeat later.

Not the slap that almost happened.

Not the ripped envelope.

That question.

Why did she ask to delete Lena’s name?

Vanessa’s shoulders rose with a shallow breath.

“I didn’t.”

The attorney placed a printed message on the table.

From Vanessa’s phone number.

Delete L.H. reference before Grant’s team audits.

Vanessa stared at it.

Then at Grant.

Then at Lena.

Her lips parted, but no lie came fast enough.

Lena felt something inside her settle.

Not joy.

Not revenge.

Recognition.

The room finally saw her sister searching for a new story and finding none.

Grant removed his wedding ring from his finger.

The ceremony had happened only an hour earlier.

The reception had barely begun.

He placed the ring on the table.

Vanessa stared at it.

“No.”

Grant’s voice was flat.

“I don’t know who I married.”

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

But Lena did not look away.

Because for once, Vanessa was not crying from pain.

May you like

She was crying because control had left her hands.

👉 Grant took off his ring, but Lena’s parents still had one last chance to tell the truth before police opened the old case against them.
