The document outlined a simple strategy.
Douglas and Sharon would attend graduation with extended relatives.
They would accuse Mia of lying about her academic performance.
They would claim she had wasted family money, failed courses, and hidden debts.
If Mia became emotional, they would describe her as unstable.
If she tried to reveal the loans, Douglas would say she had authorized them and was avoiding repayment.
A prepared statement waited for Mia’s signature.
It transferred full responsibility for every debt to her.
The confrontation was supposed to happen privately before the ceremony.
But the plan included another option.
If she refused, Douglas would challenge her publicly.
Naomi read the final paragraph twice.
“Your father believes humiliation will make you sign.”
Mia felt sick.
“He knows crowds scare me.”

“He used employees as another reason you should remain silent.”

She had uncovered a separate accounting error during an internship and saved a nonprofit scholarship program from losing nearly half a million dollars.
Douglas knew nothing about the award.
Mia had stopped sharing achievements with him because he turned each one into a complaint.
“You have time for awards but not family.”
President Reeves asked to meet her.
He offered to postpone graduation or arrange security.
Mia refused to surrender the ceremony.
“I earned the degree.”
