Chapter 11 - THE AIRPORT PLAN
The tickets were for a flight to Panama City.
Departure was scheduled three days after graduation.
Douglas and Sharon planned to transfer the remaining trust money into an offshore account, leave the United States, and tell relatives Mia had forced them into exile.
Campus police detained Douglas at graduation only for assault and interference.
He was released that evening pending the financial investigation.
By morning, the Carter house was empty.
Clothes were gone.
Passports were missing.
Douglas’s car was found near a regional train station.
Federal agents issued alerts.
Ethan knew one place his parents might go before the airport.
Eleanor’s former cabin stood two hours north of Bellmont.
Douglas inherited the small property personally.
It had been unused since her death.
Agents found the couple there with luggage, cash, and the original trust checkbook.
Sharon claimed they were taking a private trip to recover from Mia’s betrayal.
Douglas had a burner phone containing instructions for the offshore transfer.
Both were arrested.
The remaining trust funds were frozen before they moved.
News outlets reported the story nationally.
Some headlines called Mia “the graduate who exposed her parents.”
Others focused on the dramatic courtyard confrontation.
Mia hated becoming a spectacle.
She turned off her phone.
For four days, she remained inside her room.
She missed calls from journalists, relatives, and strangers who wanted advice.
She did not feel brave.
She felt hollow.
Naomi visited with groceries.
“You do not owe anyone inspiration.”
“Everyone keeps saying I should be proud.”
“You can be proud and devastated at the same time.”
Mia looked toward her diploma.
“I kept thinking there would be one explanation that made them my parents again.”
Naomi sat beside her.
“They are still your parents. That is why it hurts. Their relationship to you does not erase their choices.”
Aunt Rebecca brought Ethan.
He had received a letter from Sharon in jail.
She asked him to say Douglas controlled everything.
In exchange, she promised to protect his trust share.
Ethan handed the letter to investigators.
Mia asked whether he regretted it.
“She was asking me to lie about you again.”
He looked down.
“I spent my whole life being rewarded for not noticing what they did to you.”
Mia did not immediately forgive him for every silence.
But she believed he was finally telling the truth.
The prosecution charged Douglas with identity theft, wire fraud, trust embezzlement, tax fraud, forgery, obstruction, and attempted flight.
Sharon faced many of the same charges, plus mail theft and evidence concealment.
Martin faced reduced charges through cooperation.
The trial was set for the following spring.
Then Eleanor’s former attorney contacted Naomi.
He had found a sealed video recorded shortly before Eleanor’s death.
The instructions required it to be played only if Douglas was accused of misusing the trust.
Mia, Ethan, and prosecutors gathered in a conference room.
Eleanor appeared on the screen.
Her first words were directed to Douglas.
