Chapter 8 - THE RECORDING MARTHA COULD NOT EXPLAIN
The protective-order hearing was held two weeks later.
Martha arrived in a navy dress and carried a Bible.
She looked like a wounded grandmother.
Her attorney described the military-home incident as a family disagreement intensified by postpartum stress.
He said Martha raised her voice because she feared for Hazel.
Then Daniel played the baby-monitor recording.
Martha’s voice filled the courtroom.
Make her lose control.
Once she signs, the trust stays with us.
The judge looked over her glasses.
“What trust?”
Martha’s attorney requested a recess.
The judge denied it.
Daniel introduced the forged annual statements, false emergency email, transfer forms, and guardianship petition.
Martha claimed Penny prepared the documents.
Penny’s attorney immediately objected.
The two women, once perfectly united against Emma, began turning on each other.
Martha said she believed Emma had voluntarily allowed the trust money to support the entire family.
Daniel displayed the recorded withdrawals.
“Mrs. Vance, why did you label Penny’s university tuition as Emma’s education?”
“It was a clerical mistake.”
“For four consecutive years?”
Martha looked toward Emma.
“You know your sister needed help.”
Emma spoke only when the judge invited her.
“I helped Penny from my wages because my mother told me my father left nothing.”
Martha’s expression tightened.
“Your father wanted the family cared for.”
“Then why did he create a trust in my name?”
“He knew you were too young to manage money.”
“I’m twenty-eight.”
“You’re still easily influenced.”
Martha glanced toward Caleb.
The meaning was clear.
She believed Emma had not set boundaries herself.
She believed a husband had taken control of the daughter who once belonged to her.
The judge granted Emma and Hazel a long-term protective order.
Martha could not contact them directly, approach their home, or enter the military installation.
Penny received a separate no-contact order pending the criminal investigation.
As the hearing ended, Martha called across the courtroom.
“You’ll regret cutting off your family.”
Emma looked at Hazel sleeping against Caleb’s chest.
“No,” she said. “I regret how long I paid to keep one.”
Outside, Daniel received an urgent call from the forensic accountant.
A newly discovered trust statement contained a handwritten note from Thomas.
It instructed the trustee to deliver a sealed letter to Emma when she became a mother.
No letter had been delivered.
Martha claimed it never existed.
