Chapter 2 - THE OFFICERS AT THE DOOR
Emma opened the door without taking her eyes off Martha.
The two Military Police officers entered slowly.
“Ma’am, step away from the service member’s spouse,” one ordered.
Martha lifted both hands.
“This is a misunderstanding. My daughter just had a baby. She’s emotional.”
Emma’s incision burned as she shifted Hazel higher.
“I told her not to come.”
“That’s not true,” Martha said. “She gave me access.”
“During my pregnancy. I revoked it last week.”
Martha turned toward the officers.
“She needs help. She can barely care for herself.”
Hazel cried harder.
The comment struck exactly where Martha intended.
Emma had spent eleven days wondering whether she was doing anything right.
She worried Hazel was not eating enough.
She worried every time the baby slept too long.
She worried that asking Caleb to hold Hazel for twenty minutes made her weak.
Martha knew those fears.
She used them like weapons.
One officer picked up the page that had fallen from the folder.
“Mrs. Cole, is this your signature?”
Emma studied it.
It looked like hers.
But the letters were too smooth, almost printed.
“I’ve never seen that document.”
Martha reached for it.
“That’s a family matter.”
The officer moved it out of her reach.
Caleb rushed through the doorway moments later, still wearing his uniform.
He crossed directly to Emma.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
She tried to sound certain.
Then her knees weakened.
Caleb caught her before she fell.
A dark red stain was spreading through the lower part of her sweatpants.
The stress had reopened part of her surgical incision.
The second officer called for medical assistance.
Martha watched from beside the sofa.
“She always exaggerates when she wants attention.”
Caleb turned so sharply that even the officers stiffened.
“Do not speak to my wife.”
Martha’s mouth closed.
As medics examined Emma, the officers searched Martha’s folder with her consent after she insisted she had nothing to hide.
They found three transfer forms totaling $18,000.
They found a temporary power of attorney.
They found a copy of Hazel’s birth announcement.
And they found a petition describing Emma as mentally unstable after childbirth.
The petition requested that Martha be appointed temporary guardian of Hazel.
Emma stopped breathing.
“You came here to take my baby?”
Martha shook her head.
“I came prepared in case you proved you couldn’t handle this.”
Caleb stared at her.
The home camera continued recording every word.
The officer placed the documents into an evidence envelope.
Martha was escorted away from the house and issued an immediate order barring her from the installation pending investigation.
As Emma was taken to the base medical center, Martha called after her.
“You’re making a mistake! When Caleb leaves again, you’ll need us!”
Emma looked down at Hazel.
For the first time, she understood that her mother had not entered the house simply to demand money.
