Chapter 6 - THE LAST PAYMENT
The final payment Emma sent before Hazel’s birth was $6,200.
Martha said the family home’s heating system had failed during a cold week.
Emma transferred the money while sitting in her obstetrician’s parking lot.
She had just learned she might need an early delivery.
Caleb wanted to use their savings to prepare for unpaid leave.
Emma sent the money anyway.
When they later checked the property permits, no heating work had been completed.
The $6,200 went into Martha’s account.
Two days later, $5,000 moved to Penny.
Penny used it as a down payment on a new SUV.
Emma found the vehicle in a social media video.
Penny stood beside it holding a ribbon.
The caption read:
Hard work finally pays off.
Emma watched the video twice.
Then she turned off her phone.
Caleb did not say, “I told you so.”
He placed a cup of tea beside her and waited.
“I skipped buying the safer crib,” Emma whispered.
“We bought a safe crib.”
“A used one.”
“There’s nothing wrong with used.”
“That isn’t the point.”
She looked at him.
“I kept choosing their comfort over our child because Mom taught me that needing anything for myself was selfish.”
Caleb reached across the table.
“You can choose differently now.”
Daniel arranged a meeting with a forensic accountant.
The accountant traced withdrawals from Thomas’s trust.
Martha had used the money to pay Penny’s university tuition, purchase the SUV she drove before the new one, renovate the family kitchen, and take several vacations.
Large payments were labeled as expenses for Emma.
One listed a $22,000 “educational program.”
At the time, Emma had been working full-time at a grocery store.
Another listed $14,000 in “medical treatment.”
Emma had never received that treatment.
The forged acknowledgments stated that Emma approved every withdrawal after turning eighteen.
Her copied signature appeared on each form.
Then the accountant found a recent transaction request.
Martha had attempted to withdraw the remaining trust balance four days after Hazel’s birth.
The independent trustee blocked it because the birth automatically triggered a review.
The remaining balance was still significant.
Martha’s request included a letter claiming Emma suffered from severe postpartum confusion and had authorized Martha to continue controlling the funds.
Emma recognized the language.
It matched the guardianship petition found inside Martha’s folder.
The home invasion had been part of a plan.
Martha intended to provoke Emma while the cameras recorded.
If Emma screamed, pushed her, or appeared unable to calm Hazel, Martha would use the footage to support the claim that Emma was unstable.
