Chapter 6 - THE HUSBAND AT THE HOSPITAL

Marcus took control of the hospital room immediately.

He told nurses he was Valerie’s legal decision-maker.

He limited visitors.

He claimed Ms. Lawson was only a business attorney and should not be allowed access without his permission.

He asked doctors how long Valerie could remain on life support.

The doctor corrected him.

Valerie was breathing on her own.

“She has a severe brain injury, but she is not legally brain-dead.”

Marcus looked disappointed before quickly lowering his eyes.

Leo noticed.

For four days, the boy barely left Valerie’s room.

Marcus slept at home and returned each morning with coffee.

He took calls in the hallway.

He spoke quietly, but Leo heard pieces.

“The old will still names me.”

“Lawson cannot prove when the new one was signed.”

“I need authority before the board meeting.”

One afternoon, Leo saw Marcus remove papers from a black bag.

He recognized his mother’s signature on the final page.

The letters looked wrong.

Too careful.

Too perfect.

Marcus placed the papers beside Valerie’s hand and practiced holding the pen between her fingers.

Leo pretended to be asleep in the chair.

That night, Valerie’s eyelid moved.

Leo leaned closer.

“Mom?”

A tear appeared near her eye.

Leo remembered the card inside his backpack.

He went to the hospital bathroom, locked the door, and called Ms. Lawson.

“The blue folder matters.”

Ms. Lawson became silent.

“Leo, is your father with you?”

“He’s in Mom’s room.”

“Is your mother awake?”

“She moved her finger.”

“Do not tell Marcus.”

“Why?”

“Because I need to arrive before he knows she can respond.”

Leo described the papers.

Ms. Lawson contacted hospital administration, the company board, and the detective assigned to the crash.

A mechanic had inspected Valerie’s vehicle that morning.

Both front brake lines had been cut.

Not torn in the collision.

Cut cleanly before the crash.

Ms. Lawson asked Leo to keep the call connected.

“Place your phone in your pocket. Do not confront your father. Stay near the nurses if you feel unsafe.”

When Leo returned, Marcus was standing beside Valerie’s bed.

He held the forged will.

“She can’t hear you,” he said when Leo kissed his mother.

Then Valerie’s finger moved.

Leo understood what his mother needed him to do.

Not panic.

Not reveal her.

Protect the tiny sign that she was still inside her injured body.

He whispered, “Don’t open your eyes, Mom.”

Marcus stepped toward him.

Leo backed against the bed.

“I already called her.”

Footsteps approached.

The door opened.

And for the first time since the crash, Marcus realized Valerie was no longer alone.

👉 Ms. Lawson had stopped the forged signature, but Marcus’s missing forty minutes on the night before the crash could still prove attempted murder.
