Chapter 1 - DON’T OPEN YOUR EYES

Marcus stood beside his wife’s hospital bed with a pen in one hand and Valerie’s limp wrist in the other.

The heart monitor beeped steadily.

Cold fluorescent light washed over the bruises covering Valerie’s face. A white hospital bracelet circled her wrist. Beside the bed, a cheerful Get Well Soon card looked painfully out of place.

Nine-year-old Leo leaned over his mother and kissed her cheek.

His eyes were red from crying.

Marcus watched without emotion, holding a paper coffee cup near his chest.

“She can’t hear you.”

Leo did not answer.

He wrapped both arms around Valerie as though his small body could shield her from the entire room.

Beneath the blanket, one of Valerie’s fingers moved.

Barely.

Leo saw it.

His breath caught, but he did not call for a nurse.

He lowered his mouth beside his mother’s ear.

“Don’t open your eyes, Mom.”

A tear slipped from the corner of Valerie’s closed eye.

Marcus stepped closer.

“What did you say?”

“Nothing.”

Leo backed away from the bed but remained between Marcus and Valerie.

Inside the pocket of his hoodie, his hand closed around his phone.

The call was still connected.

The name on the screen read:

MS. LAWSON.

Marcus reached for Valerie’s hand again.

He placed the pen between her fingers and began positioning her thumb against a document resting on the bedside table.

Leo looked at the papers.

A new will.

A medical power of attorney.

An authorization transferring control of Valerie’s company and estate to Marcus.

“I already called her,” Leo said.

Marcus froze.

“Called who?”

Footsteps rushed through the hallway.

The hospital-room door opened before Marcus could reach Leo’s phone.

Ms. Lawson entered wearing a dark suit and carrying a thick manila folder.

A hospital security officer stood beside her.

Behind them was a detective.

Ms. Lawson’s eyes dropped to Marcus’s hand gripping Valerie’s wrist.

“Step away from my client.”

Marcus released her.

“She asked me to help her sign.”

“She has been medically unresponsive for four days.”

“She squeezed my hand.”

“So you decided to rewrite her will?”

Marcus’s face tightened.

The detective entered and closed the door.

Ms. Lawson opened the folder.

Inside were photographs of Valerie’s wrecked car.

Close-up images showed two severed brake lines beneath the chassis.

Another page displayed a recently drafted will Marcus had never been authorized to prepare.

The final document was a financial report bearing the name of Valerie’s estate company.

Marcus stared at the words printed across the mechanic’s report:

BRAKE LINES INTENTIONALLY CUT.

Leo moved closer to his mother.

Valerie’s finger moved again.

This time, Ms. Lawson saw it.

“Valerie,” she said carefully, “if you can hear me, move your right index finger once.”

The finger lifted.

Once.

Marcus stepped backward.

The detective blocked the door.

Ms. Lawson looked directly at him.

“Your wife is not gone, Marcus.”

Leo wiped his eyes.

May you like

“And she heard everything.”

👉 Valerie’s smallest movement had stopped Marcus from stealing her estate—but the reason he needed her dead began weeks before the crash.
