Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT IN THE GARAGE

The neighborhood security camera showed Marcus entering the garage at 1:17 a.m.
At the time, no one noticed.
Valerie and Leo were still at the hotel.
Marcus wore dark pants, gloves, and an old Bennett Industrial jacket.
He stayed inside for twenty-three minutes.
At 1:42, he carried a small tool case toward his car.
The garage’s interior camera recorded nothing.
Its power cable had been disconnected.
The following morning, Marcus called Valerie.
His voice was gentle.
He apologized for blocking the doorway.
He said he would cooperate with the audit.
He promised to move into a hotel if she wanted space.
“Leo has a science presentation Monday,” he said. “He should not feel like our marriage is falling apart before then.”
Valerie looked toward her son.
Leo was sitting on the hotel bed building a bridge from wooden sticks.
She agreed to return home for one night.
Marcus was attentive when they arrived.
He carried their bags.
He ordered dinner.
He slept in the guest room.
By morning, Valerie wondered whether fear had made her see every gesture as a threat.
She left for the mechanic shortly before ten.
Leo stayed with a neighbor.
Marcus claimed he had an investor meeting across town.
Valerie drove less than four miles before the brake pedal sank to the floor.
She pressed again.
Nothing.
The car accelerated down a sloping road toward an intersection.
Valerie pulled the emergency brake.
The rear wheels locked briefly, then released.
A truck entered the crossing ahead.
Valerie turned hard.
Her car struck a concrete barrier, spun across the road, and crashed into a drainage wall.
The airbag exploded.
Glass filled the vehicle.
Valerie’s head struck the side window.
A driver behind her called 911.
Before paramedics arrived, someone opened the passenger door.
Valerie could not focus.
She saw a dark coat.
A familiar wedding ring.
Marcus’s voice whispered near her ear.
“Where is the blue folder?”
Valerie tried to speak.
Marcus searched the passenger compartment.
He took her phone and purse.
When another vehicle stopped, Marcus stepped away and pretended he had just arrived.
He told witnesses he had been driving nearby when he saw the wreck.
At the hospital, Valerie underwent emergency surgery for a brain injury, broken ribs, and internal bleeding.
Doctors warned that she might not wake.
Marcus sat beside Leo in the waiting room.
He cried where nurses could see him.
He told everyone the accident was caused by Valerie’s stress and exhaustion.
But the driver who called 911 remembered something strange.
Marcus had been at the wreck before the ambulance.
May you like
And Valerie’s calendar showed he was supposed to be attending a meeting thirty minutes away.
👉 Marcus claimed he reached the crash by coincidence, but his location data would place him behind Valerie minutes before her brakes failed.
