Chapter 4 - THE BLUE FOLDER

Valerie began keeping the audit records inside a blue folder locked in her office safe.
Marcus noticed the folder before he knew what it contained.
He asked Valerie’s assistant whether board documents had recently changed.
He questioned the company accountant about outside legal fees.
He searched Valerie’s home office while she attended a school event with Leo.
The security system recorded everything.
Marcus used a key he had taken from Valerie’s desk.
He opened drawers, photographed tax returns, and attempted three combinations on the safe.
He failed.
When Valerie reviewed the camera footage, she finally accepted what she had resisted for months.
Marcus was no longer merely hiding money.
He was preparing for a fight.
Ms. Lawson filed sealed notices restricting unauthorized changes to Bennett Industrial’s ownership.
She also created a secure digital archive of every document in the blue folder.
Valerie planned to remove Marcus from the company after an emergency board meeting.
The meeting was scheduled for Monday morning.
On Friday night, Marcus arrived home carrying flowers.
He prepared dinner.
He opened a bottle of Valerie’s favorite wine.
For two hours, he acted like the man she had married.
Then he asked her to sign a refinancing package.
Valerie read the first page.
The loan would use the family home and two company properties as collateral.
Marcus would control the borrowed funds.
“No.”
“We need liquidity.”
“The company has liquidity.”
“Not enough for the expansion.”
“There is no approved expansion.”
Marcus poured more wine into his glass.
“You have been listening to Lawson.”
“She is the company’s attorney.”
“She wants to control you.”
“No. She wants to stop you from stealing.”
The room became silent.
Marcus placed the glass down.
“So that is what you think of me.”
“I know about Northstar.”
His eyes changed.
Valerie continued.
“I know about the equipment company. I know about the commissions. The board will review everything Monday.”
Marcus leaned back.
“What happens to me?”
“You will be suspended during the investigation.”
“You mean thrown out of the company I built.”
“My father built it.”
“I built you.”
Valerie stood.
“Do not speak to me that way.”
“You were a frightened woman hiding behind your father when I met you.”
“I was already running the company.”
“And I made people take you seriously.”
Valerie picked up her phone.
Marcus blocked the doorway.
“Sign the refinance.”
“No.”
“Then at least transfer the house into both names.”
“No.”
His voice dropped.
“Everything you have is protected. Everything I have depends on whether you still love me.”
“Love is not ownership.”
Marcus stepped aside.
Valerie left the room with Leo.
They spent the night at a hotel.
The next morning, Valerie told Ms. Lawson she wanted to file for divorce.
She also scheduled a meeting with a mechanic.
For two weeks, her car’s brake pedal had felt unusually soft.
Marcus received an alert from the family’s shared calendar before Valerie could remove him.
The appointment title read:
