Emily was too weak to travel.

Emily sat propped against pillows in a soft cap, one hand resting over her stomach.

Emily listened without crying.

He admitted Patricia paid him privately.
He admitted he never clearly informed Emily he was connected to the Carter family.
He admitted he pressured Emily to sign quickly by saying Ethan wanted distance.
Emily closed her eyes.
Ethan’s hand tightened under hers.
The judge ordered the divorce settlement temporarily frozen pending fraud review.
She granted Emily full protection from Patricia’s interference.
She ordered Patricia to cease all contact with Emily, her doctors, and all records connected to the pregnancy.
The foundation launched its own investigation.
Charles removed Patricia from every board position that afternoon.
Lauren cut ties with her mother publicly.
Ethan did something quieter.
He signed away his access to the family trust and created a separate medical and education fund for Clara in Emily’s control.
When Patricia heard that, her mask finally broke.
“You are choosing her over your own mother?” she snapped.
Ethan looked at the screen.
“No,” he said. “I’m choosing the family you tried to destroy.”
Patricia stared at him.
For once, she had no room to perform.
No hallway to whisper in.
No frightened pregnant woman to corner.
No son willing to believe her.
The judge ended the hearing.
Emily looked down at their joined hands.
“You didn’t have to do the trust.”
“Yes, I did.”
“Money won’t fix this.”
“I know.”
She studied him.
“What are you trying to fix, Ethan?”
He answered honestly.
“Me.”
Emily looked away toward the window, where pale winter light touched the hospital glass.
