PART 3: The Mother Who Answered First

PART 3: The Mother Who Answered First

Ethan called his mother from the hospital stairwell.

His hands were shaking so badly he nearly dropped the phone.

Patricia Carter answered on the second ring.

“Ethan, darling. Are you still at the hospital fundraiser?”

He closed his eyes.

The fundraiser.

That was why he was there.

He had come to speak at a charity event two floors above oncology. A clean ballroom. Donors. Champagne. People clapping for compassion while Emily sat alone in a hallway beneath them.

“Where are you?” he asked.

“At home. Why?”

“Did Emily call you five months ago?”

There was a pause.

Barely half a second.

But Ethan heard it.

“Emily?” Patricia said lightly. “Why would she call me?”

“She was sick.”

Another pause.

This one longer.

“Ethan, I don’t know what she told you, but you need to be careful. Illness makes people desperate.”

His hand tightened around the railing.

“She’s pregnant.”

Silence.

Then his mother sighed.

Not shocked.

Not joyful.

Annoyed.

That sound told him everything.

“You saw her,” Patricia said.

Ethan’s voice went cold.

“You knew.”

“Ethan—”

“You knew she had cancer. You knew she was pregnant. And you let me believe she left me.”

Patricia’s voice sharpened.

“I protected you.”

Ethan laughed once, breathless and broken.

“Protected me from my wife?”

“From a woman who was going to destroy your life,” Patricia snapped. “Do you have any idea what caring for her would have done to you? To your career? To the foundation? To the Carter name?”

Ethan leaned against the wall like he had been punched.

The Carter name.

That was always what Patricia loved most.

More than truth.

More than marriage.

More than the son she claimed to protect.

“What did you do?” Ethan asked.

Patricia lowered her voice.

“She was weak. Scared. Alone. I told her the kindest thing was to let you go before you spent the next year watching her die.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

“You told her I knew?”

“I told her what she needed to hear.”

“What did you do?”

“She signed the divorce, didn’t she?”

Ethan’s eyes burned.

“She signed because you lied.”

“She signed because deep down she knew I was right.”

The stairwell door opened behind him.

His older sister, Lauren, stepped in, still wearing a black dress from the fundraiser.

She looked worried.

“Ethan?”

He put the phone on speaker.

Patricia’s voice filled the stairwell.

“That girl was never strong enough for this family. And now she is carrying a sick child into your life because she knows guilt is the only thing that will bring you back.”

Lauren covered her mouth.

Ethan’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“Don’t ever call my child sick again.”

Patricia went silent.

Lauren whispered, “Child?”

Ethan looked at his sister.

“Emily is pregnant.”

Lauren’s face drained.

“And Mom knew?”

Patricia snapped through the phone.

“Lauren, stay out of this.”

Lauren stepped closer.

“No. What did you do?”

Patricia hung up.

Ethan stared at the dead screen.

For months, he had blamed grief on Emily.

Now grief had a face.

His mother’s.

Lauren looked at him, tears rising.

“Ethan, there’s something else.”

He looked up.

She swallowed.

“The divorce attorney Mom used… he wasn’t Emily’s attorney.”

Ethan’s blood ran cold.

“What?”

Lauren’s voice shook.

“Mom hired him.”

👉 Ethan discovered his mother had lied, but the fake divorce attorney was the key to proving Emily had been trapped, not freed.
