PART 6: Patricia Walks Into the Hospital

PART 6: Patricia Walks Into the Hospital

Patricia Carter arrived at the hospital the next morning dressed like she was attending a board meeting.

Cream coat.

Pearl earrings.

Perfect hair.

No visible guilt.

She stepped into Emily’s room without knocking.

Ethan stood instantly.

“Get out.”

Patricia looked at him like he was a child embarrassing her in public.

“We need to talk privately.”

“No.”

Her eyes moved to Emily.

Emily lay against the pillows, pale and exhausted, but awake.

Patricia’s face softened into something fake.

“Emily, I’m sorry you’re unwell.”

Emily stared at her.

Unwell.

As if cancer were a minor inconvenience.

As if pregnancy were a rumor.

As if Patricia had not stood in that same hospital and told a terrified woman that her husband wanted her gone.

Ethan stepped between them.

“Don’t speak to her.”

Patricia sighed.

“This is exactly what I was afraid of. She pulls you into the room, shows you a few tears, and suddenly you forget everything she did.”

Lauren walked in behind Patricia.

“She didn’t do anything.”

Patricia turned.

“Lauren, leave.”

Lauren did not move.

Then Charles Carter entered.

Ethan’s father looked older than he had at the fundraiser. His tie was crooked. His face was gray with shock and shame.

Beside him stood the Carter Foundation’s general counsel, a calm woman named Denise Shaw.

Patricia’s expression shifted.

Just slightly.

“Charles,” she said. “This is not appropriate.”

Charles looked at Emily.

Then at the IV pole.

Then at her shaved head.

His voice broke.

“Emily, I am so sorry.”

Patricia stiffened.

“For what? She is not family anymore.”

Ethan’s voice turned to ice.

“She is carrying my child.”

Patricia’s mouth tightened.

“That remains to be confirmed.”

The room went dead silent.

Emily flinched.

Ethan stepped forward so fast Charles grabbed his arm.

Patricia knew she had gone too far, but pride would not let her stop.

“I only meant,” she said, “that emotions are running high.”

Denise Shaw opened a folder.

“Mrs. Carter, foundation funds were used to pay Attorney Martin Voss for services marked as reputation protection. Mr. Voss then represented himself to Emily Carter as a neutral divorce attorney.”

Patricia’s face closed.

“I don’t handle every invoice personally.”

Denise placed another page on the table.

“This invoice was approved with your digital signature.”

Patricia looked at Charles.

“You’re allowing them to attack me?”

Charles’s eyes were wet.

“I’m asking what you did.”

Patricia laughed softly.

“I saved our son from a lifetime of hospital bills and tragedy.”

Emily’s breath caught.

Ethan looked like he might shatter from rage.

Patricia continued, voice rising.

“She was diagnosed. Pregnant. Weak. She would have consumed him. Consumed this family. I made a hard decision because none of you had the courage.”

Emily stared at her.

There it was.

No mask.

No concern.

Just the truth in its ugliest form.

Denise quietly touched the recorder in her pocket.

Patricia did not notice.

Ethan did.

He looked at Emily.

Emily looked back.

For the first time, they were on the same side of the same battlefield.

Charles whispered, “Patricia… what have you done?”

Patricia’s eyes flashed.

“What you were too soft to do.”

Ethan’s voice shook.

“You stole my wife from me.”

Patricia looked at him coldly.

“No. I removed a burden.”

Emily’s monitor beeped faster.

A nurse stepped in immediately.

“Everyone out except approved support.”

Patricia pointed at Ethan.

“If you choose her, you lose your place in this family.”

Ethan looked at Emily.

Then at the small monitor tracking their baby.

Then at his mother.

“I already lost my family once,” he said. “Because I listened to you.”

He walked to Emily’s bedside and took her hand.

“I’m not doing it again.”

Patricia’s face went pale.

May you like

Because for the first time in Ethan’s life, her threat had failed.

👉 Patricia finally confessed who she really was, but Emily’s body was weakening faster than anyone expected.
