PART 7: The Night Clara Almost Left Them

PART 7: The Night Clara Almost Left Them

That evening, Emily’s fever climbed.

At first, she insisted she was fine.

She had spent months pretending pain was manageable because needing help had become dangerous. She knew how to smile through dizziness. How to say “I’m okay” when she was not. How to wait until no one was watching before she cried.

But the monitor told the truth.

Her blood pressure dropped.

Her temperature rose.

Her breathing became shallow.

Dr. Harris and the maternal-fetal team rushed in.

Ethan was told to step back.

He did.

Barely.

Emily’s hand reached for him before she seemed to know she was doing it.

He took it.

“I’m here.”

Her eyes were glassy.

“If something happens—”

“No.”

“Ethan.”

“No.”

Her grip was weak, but her voice sharpened.

“Listen to me.”

He went silent.

“If something happens, you protect her from your mother.”

Ethan broke.

“Our baby is going to know you.”

Emily swallowed, tears sliding into her temples.

“You don’t know that.”

“I know I am not letting your story end in this room.”

The doctors worked around them.

A nurse adjusted oxygen.

Another checked the fetal monitor.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Then the baby’s heartbeat flickered on the screen.

Too fast.

Then uneven.

Ethan stared at it like his own heartbeat had moved outside his body.

Dr. Harris gave quiet orders.

Magnesium.

Fluids.

Blood work.

High-risk consult.

Possible emergency intervention if either Emily or the baby crashed.

Emily looked at Ethan.

Her fear was naked now.

Not for herself.

For Clara.

“I’m scared,” she whispered.

Ethan bent closer, forehead nearly touching hers.

“I know.”

“I wanted to tell you in the kitchen,” she said, voice drifting. “That night. I bought tiny yellow socks.”

Ethan shut his eyes.

The kitchen.

The night he came home to an empty house.

The night he found the divorce packet.

The night he believed she had chosen to leave.

“I would have danced with you,” he whispered.

Emily’s eyes fluttered.

“What?”

“If you had told me. I would’ve danced with you in that kitchen like an idiot.”

A broken smile touched her mouth.

“You hate dancing.”

“I would’ve learned.”

Her eyes closed.

The monitor alarm sounded.

Ethan’s body went cold.

Dr. Harris moved fast.

“Emily, stay with me.”

Ethan backed away as the team surrounded her.

His hands shook.

Lauren stood beside him, crying silently.

Charles sat in the corner with his face in both hands.

Outside the room, Patricia had been banned from the unit.

Inside, everything that mattered was measured in beeps.

Ethan pressed both hands against the glass wall of the room as they worked.

For the first time in his life, he prayed without bargaining.

Not for his reputation.

Not for forgiveness.

Not even for a second chance.

Just for Emily to open her eyes.

Minutes passed.

Then more.

Finally, the alarm stopped.

Dr. Harris turned.

“Her pressure is stabilizing. The baby’s heartbeat is recovering.”

Ethan nearly collapsed.

Emily opened her eyes halfway.

“Clara?”

Dr. Harris smiled softly.

“Still fighting.”

Emily’s lips trembled.

Ethan came back to her side, tears streaming down his face.

“She’s like her mother,” he whispered.

Emily looked at him, exhausted beyond words.

For the first time, she let him kiss her hand.

👉 Emily survived the night, but the battle moved from the hospital room to court, where Patricia tried one final time to rewrite the truth.
