Chapter 9 - Daniel’s Choice
Vanessa stood.
Her chair scraped across the floor.
“You met with lawyers.”
“Yes.”
“You involved the bank.”
“Yes.”
“You are trying to destroy us.”
“No. I am refusing to let you destroy me.”
Vanessa turned toward Daniel.
“Tell her what happens if she refuses.”
Daniel remained seated.
“Daniel.”
He looked at his mother.
“The lender calls my guarantees.”
“And?”
“We may lose our house.”
“Because you guaranteed Vanessa’s debts.”
“I was trying to support my wife.”
“You also signed papers to move me into assisted living.”
His face became pale.
“I thought it was a reservation.”
“You refused to read it.”
“That isn’t the same as knowing.”
“No,” Eleanor said. “It is choosing not to know.”
Vanessa slammed her palm on the table.
“Stop making him feel guilty.”
Eleanor looked at her.
“He should feel guilty.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“Mom, just sign it.”
There it was.
The choice.
Not between Eleanor and Vanessa.
Between truth and convenience.
Daniel chose convenience.
Eleanor felt something inside her become still.
She had spent weeks hoping he was only confused.
He was not.
He understood enough.
He simply wanted his mother to carry the cost.
Vanessa placed the bank card request beside the deed.
“You will transfer the property and authorize the guarantee tonight.”
“No.”
“Then Daniel loses everything.”
“That is not my debt.”
“It is family debt.”
“Family does not forge medical records.”
Vanessa lifted a coffee cup.
Her hand shook with rage.
“You think being old makes you untouchable?”
“No.”
“You think those lawyers care about you?”
“I think they care about evidence.”
Vanessa saw the phone beneath the documents.
She reached for it.
Eleanor pulled it away.
Daniel stood.
“Everyone calm down.”
But he moved toward Eleanor, not Vanessa.
He tried to take the folder from his mother.
Eleanor held it tightly.
“Let go,” he said.
“These are my documents.”
“Mom, you’re escalating.”
Vanessa looked at the plates.
Then at Eleanor.
“Learn not to say no.”
She seized the nearest plate.
Daniel saw the movement.
He had time to stop her.
