Chapter 8 - The Dinner of New Beginnings

Vanessa arrived wearing a white silk dress.

Daniel carried champagne.

A notary waited inside a car two streets away, prepared to join them once Eleanor signed.

Vanessa called the evening a fresh start.

“We’ve all said things we regret.”

Eleanor sat at the head of the table.

“What do you regret?”

Vanessa smiled.

“Allowing stress to affect the family.”

“That is not an answer.”

Daniel poured wine.

“Mom, can we please have one peaceful dinner?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“Peaceful for whom?”

He avoided her eyes.

Dinner began.

Vanessa discussed a new development contract she claimed would save Voss Living Concepts.

The contract did not exist.

She said the two-million-dollar loan would bridge the company for only ninety days.

Cynthia’s audit showed Vanessa had no realistic way to repay it.

After dessert, Daniel removed a folder from his briefcase.

The deed transfer lay on top.

Beneath it was the loan guarantee.

A third document granted Daniel control of the family trust if Eleanor became medically incapacitated.

Eleanor touched the papers.

“Why is this here?”

Daniel’s voice was soft.

“It simplifies everything.”

“For whom?”

“For all of us.”

Vanessa placed a pen beside Eleanor’s hand.

“The house moves into Daniel’s name temporarily. The bank receives its security. Once the loan is repaid, the deed returns.”

“No.”

Vanessa’s smile remained.

“You haven’t read it.”

“I don’t need to.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Mom, please.”

“No.”

“Forty employees may lose their jobs.”

“Vanessa has already stopped paying most of them.”

Both stared at her.

Eleanor continued.

“The company has no new contract. The loan will pay old creditors and your personal guarantees.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You said the contracts were signed.”

“They will be.”

“When?”

“Soon.”

Eleanor watched doubt appear on her son’s face.

For one hopeful second, she believed he might stand.

Vanessa placed one hand over his.

“If your mother cared about you, she would not interrogate us like criminals.”

Eleanor looked at Daniel.

“Ask her about the forged medical report.”

His face tightened.

“Mom—”

“Ask her.”

Vanessa pushed the deed closer.

“You are confused.”

“I passed an independent cognitive evaluation.”

The room became silent.

Vanessa understood that Eleanor knew everything.

The performance ended.

👉 Vanessa realized the medical trap had failed, so she abandoned persuasion and ordered Daniel to choose between his mother and financial ruin.
