Chapter 6 - The Camera in the Study
Robert had installed a small security camera in the study after a burglary twenty years earlier.
The original system no longer worked.
Or so Vanessa believed.
Eleanor had upgraded it quietly after Robert’s death.
The camera pointed toward the desk where she paid bills and stored trust documents.
One evening, Eleanor reviewed the footage.
Vanessa entered while Eleanor attended church.
Daniel unlocked the study door.
He remained near the hallway.
Vanessa opened a drawer and removed an old checkbook.
She sat at the desk.
Then she began copying Eleanor’s signature onto blank paper.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Daniel watched.
“You’re making me nervous,” he said.
“I need to know whether the bank’s notary will question it.”
“We said Mom would sign herself.”
“If she refuses, we can’t lose the entire company because she’s being stubborn.”
Daniel walked into the study.
“No forgery.”
Vanessa looked up.
“You already signed the medical referral.”
“That’s different.”
“How?”
“It was for her safety.”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Tell yourself whatever helps.”
She continued practicing.
Daniel did not stop her.
He left the room.
The video captured every second.
Eleanor watched it twice.
Her son had not forged her name.
But he had seen the plan and walked away.
She saved the footage to an encrypted drive.
Then she called Detective Marcus Bell.
Marcus had been Robert’s friend.
He was also the detective who investigated the burglary years earlier.
Eleanor described the medical forgery, loan application and signature practice.
Marcus did not make promises.
He asked precise questions.
“Has any deed been filed?”
“Not yet.”
“Has money moved?”
“No.”
“Have they threatened you physically?”
“Not directly.”
“Then we need to document attempted fraud and coercion before they realize you’re working with us.”
He advised Eleanor not to remain alone with Vanessa if possible.
She agreed.
Then she did something that worried both Marcus and Helen.
She allowed the family dinner to proceed.
Vanessa had scheduled it for Friday.
The bank deadline was Saturday morning.
The invitation called it a “celebration of new beginnings.”
Eleanor knew it would be the final attempt to get her signature.
Marcus arranged officers nearby.
Helen prepared an emergency injunction.
Eleanor’s independent medical report was sealed and ready.
Still, one piece was missing.
The bank had not yet confirmed whether it would accept the deed.
