Chapter 8 - THE LETTER HER FATHER SENT
Thomas Bennett wrote the letter after meeting Daniel privately.
Daniel had asked him for a position inside Bennett Restoration.
Thomas refused.
He had reviewed Mercer Urban Group’s accounts and found unpaid taxes, hidden loans, and vendors connected to Judith.
Daniel became angry.
He said marriage would eventually give him influence whether Thomas approved or not.
Thomas wrote:
Claire, a man who believes marriage creates authority over your work will eventually treat your refusal as betrayal.
He urged her to keep the mansion, company, and investment accounts separate.
He warned that Judith spoke about the house as though Claire’s purchase had merely returned property to its rightful owners.
Thomas intended to meet Claire in person.
He died from a heart attack before doing so.
Judith intercepted the letter after it arrived at the mansion.
She later told Daniel:
Your father-in-law tried to turn her against us. I handled it.
A recovered message confirmed it.
Claire sat in Elena’s office holding the letter with her left hand.
Her cast felt suddenly heavier.
“My father knew.”
“He suspected.”
“I defended Daniel to him.”
“You did not have this information.”
“I told Dad he was being unfair.”
Elena did not offer easy reassurance.
Thomas had delayed speaking directly because he feared damaging Claire’s happiness.
Judith exploited that delay.
The letter also mentioned Charles.
Thomas believed Charles was too eager to excuse Daniel’s financial behavior.
He planned to remove Charles from the board.
Then he died.
Charles remained and became Daniel’s access point.
Investigators reviewed Thomas’s final corporate files.
He had created a protection trust for Claire.
It held emergency funds and a controlling block of company voting rights outside Charles’s reach.
The trust activated automatically if Claire suffered violence connected to property or business coercion.
Daniel’s assault triggered it.
Claire now controlled enough votes to remove every compromised director immediately.
The protection Thomas could not deliver personally had survived in legal form.
Claire used it carefully.
She appointed an independent forensic board.
She did not place friends or relatives in control.
Every vendor linked to Daniel was suspended.
Employees who reported concerns received whistleblower protection.
The review uncovered another category of theft.
Daniel had used renovation budgets to purchase luxury items for Judith and Vanessa.
Judith’s silver dinner dress came from a company card.
Vanessa’s car was paid through a false equipment lease.
The wine poured while Claire sat injured had been purchased using money taken from an affordable-housing project.
The cruelty at dinner had been financed by the same workers Daniel planned to betray.
One more discovery disturbed Claire.
Several checks from Mercer Urban Group had been issued to a private clinic.
The clinic specialized in psychiatric evaluations and guardianship cases.
Daniel had scheduled an appointment for Claire.
She had never agreed to attend.
The physician had already drafted a statement describing her as paranoid, controlling, and unable to manage property.
