Chapter 2 - THE NIGHT HE NEEDED HER SIGNATURE
Three nights earlier, Daniel entered the bedroom carrying a document folder.
Claire was sitting beside the window reviewing bank alerts.
A new loan application had been submitted against the mansion.
Requested amount:
$6.5 million.
Borrower:
Daniel Mercer.
Property owner:
Claire Bennett.
Her electronic signature appeared at the bottom.
It was not hers.
Daniel placed a pen on the nightstand.
“Sign the paper version.”
“You forged the online one.”
“It is not forgery if you planned to approve it.”
“I never planned to approve anything.”
Daniel’s construction company, Mercer Urban Group, had been losing money for two years.
He told investors it was expanding.
In reality, projects were delayed, vendors were unpaid, and tax liens had begun appearing.
Claire had already covered one emergency payroll.
She refused to cover another.
Daniel stood between her and the door.
“The bank needs confirmation by morning.”
“The house is not collateral for your company.”
“My family lived here for generations.”
“Your mother lost it to foreclosure.”
His face changed.
Claire immediately understood she had said the one truth Daniel never allowed anyone to speak aloud.
The white mansion had once belonged to Judith’s parents.
After years of borrowing and unpaid taxes, the bank seized it.
Claire purchased it eighteen months before marrying Daniel.
She restored the roof, plumbing, electrical system, and gardens.
To protect Daniel’s pride, she let the Mercers call it the family home.
That silence became entitlement.
Daniel seized her wrist.
“Sign.”
Claire pulled away.
He twisted her arm behind her back.
Pain shot through her shoulder.
She screamed.
Judith appeared in the doorway wearing a silk robe.
Instead of stopping him, she closed the bedroom door.
“Do not let her walk away until she understands what marriage requires.”
Claire kicked backward.
Daniel lost his grip for one second.
She reached the hallway.
He caught her near the staircase and slammed her arm against the wooden banister.
The bone cracked.
Claire collapsed.
Daniel stared at her for several seconds.
Then Judith said:
“She fell.”
At the emergency room, Daniel told doctors Claire slipped on the stairs.
Claire almost contradicted him.
Then Vanessa arrived carrying insurance papers and stood beside the bed.
Daniel whispered:
“If you say anything, I will make sure your company collapses before you leave this hospital.”
Claire remained silent.
But the nurse photographed the marks on her wrist.
And before discharge, Claire sent one message to Elena:
May you like
I am coming back to the house. Prepare everything.
