Chapter 4 - The Phone That Wouldn’t Turn Off

Noel lunged for the livestream phone.

Michael got there first.

He lifted the tripod but did not stop the stream.

Not yet.

“Noel,” he said, voice low, “don’t touch it.”

The comments were moving too fast to read.

Did she spill soup on her?

Call 911.

This is elder abuse.

Did he say keep streaming?

Noel’s face went pale beneath her makeup.

“Michael, you’re making this look insane.”

Michael looked down at Alice.

His mother was still on the floor.

Still shaking.

Still trying to hold the towel over the burn marks spreading beneath her blouse.

That was when his expression changed from cold to devastated.

He knelt beside her.

“Mom, can you stand?”

Alice nodded once.

But when she tried, her knees trembled.

Michael turned toward Noel.

“You left her on the floor?”

Noel’s voice jumped.

“It was five seconds.”

“It was live.”

“She was being dramatic.”

Michael stared at her.

“Soup was hot.”

“It wasn’t that hot.”

Alice whispered, “It was boiling.”

The kitchen went silent.

Camille, Noel’s mother, stepped forward.

“Noel, tell him it was an accident.”

Alice looked at Camille.

“You watched her tilt the bowl.”

Camille froze.

Sloane covered her mouth.

Michael helped Alice into a chair, then called emergency services.

Noel started crying the moment he said “ambulance.”

Not because of Alice.

Because of the recording.

“Michael, please. My brand can’t survive this.”

Michael looked at the livestream.

Then at his wife.

“My mother’s skin is burning, and you’re worried about your brand?”

Noel’s face hardened.

Just for a second.

Enough for the camera to catch it.

Then she softened again.

“You don’t understand. People twist things.”

Michael picked up the blue folder from under the makeup wipes.

Noel’s eyes followed it.

“You had this,” he said.

Noel laughed nervously.

“I found it. I was going to give it back.”

Alice’s voice was quiet.

“You told me I was misplacing things.”

Michael opened the folder.

The first page was the cease-and-desist notice.

The second was the trust clause.

The third was a list of videos Alice had asked Noel not to post.

Michael looked at the dates.

Then at the livestream phone.

Every comment, every reaction, every second was still being captured.

The door opened again.

Thomas Reed stepped in, still wearing his overcoat.

Behind him came Marissa Kane.

Noel’s mouth fell open.

“You brought lawyers?”

Alice looked at her.

“Noel, you brought cameras.”

Marissa immediately moved toward Alice.

“I’m so sorry. Paramedics are on the way.”

Thomas stood beside Michael, eyes on the phone.

“Stream is still live?”

Michael nodded.

Thomas looked at Noel.

“Good.”

Noel whispered, “Good?”

Thomas pointed to the blue folder.

“Because you just broadcast yourself standing beside documents you claimed not to have.”

👉 Noel wanted to turn off the livestream before it destroyed her, but the live audience had already become thousands of witnesses.
