Chapter 2 - The House Noel Turned Into a Set

Alice’s kitchen had never been built for cameras.

It had been built for Sunday breakfasts.

For Henry making pancakes too thick in the middle.

For Michael doing homework at the island while Alice packed lunches.

For Christmas cookies, spilled coffee, ordinary arguments, and the kind of quiet love that never needed followers.

After Henry died, the house became too silent.

Westchester winters felt longer.

The stairs felt wider.

The second coffee mug stayed in the cabinet.

Michael worried about her constantly.

So when Noel suggested she and Michael move in “temporarily” while their apartment renovation finished, Alice said yes.

She wanted life in the house again.

Footsteps.

Voices.

A reason to cook too much.

At first, Noel was charming.

She brought flowers.

Called Alice “Mom.”

Posted soft videos about “three generations of women healing together,” even though there were only two.

Her audience loved Alice.

They called her elegant.

Classy.

Grandma goals.

Noel noticed.

Then the content changed.

A camera appeared during breakfast.

Then during laundry.

Then while Alice gardened.

Then while Alice cried quietly on Henry’s birthday and Noel captioned it:

Grief is messy, but family heals.

Alice asked her not to post that one.

Noel sighed.

“People connect with authenticity.”

Michael worked long hours as a corporate attorney. He saw clips, not moments. Noel showed him the edited versions.

Alice laughing.

Alice baking.

Alice looking shy but sweet.

“She loves it,” Noel told him.

Alice did not know how to tell her son the truth.

Not at first.

How did a mother say, Your wife is using my loneliness as content?

So she tried boundaries.

“No filming before coffee.”

“No filming in my bedroom.”

“No posting without asking.”

Noel agreed.

Then ignored all three.

When Alice objected, Noel called her adorable.

Then sensitive.

Then ungrateful.

“You know how much exposure this gives your little charity work?” Noel said once, adjusting her ring light in the kitchen.

Alice had run a widow support circle for eight years.

Noel made it sound like a hobby.

The worst video came three weeks before the soup.

Noel filmed Alice trying to open a jar and made a caption:

When your mother-in-law refuses to admit she’s getting old.

Alice watched it alone that night.

Three million views.

Thousands of laughing comments.

Michael texted her:

Mom, Noel said you approved this. Are you okay?

Alice typed yes.

Deleted it.

Typed I don’t want this.

Deleted that too.

Finally, she wrote:

We should talk soon.

Noel saw the message on Michael’s phone before he did.

The next morning, the blue legal folder disappeared from Alice’s desk.

May you like

And Noel became sweeter than ever.

👉 Noel turned Alice’s home into content, but stealing the blue folder proved she knew Alice’s patience was coming to an end.
