Chapter 6

In the corridor, Hassan barked, “Open the door.”
The young guard stepped forward.
Alexis froze beside the lock.
The key slid in from outside.
Turned.
The door opened inward.
Two guards entered first, rifles raised.
They expected to find her in the corner.
Crying.
Broken.
Waiting.
The cell looked empty.
One guard stepped deeper.
Alexis dropped from above the doorframe.
Her knee hit his shoulder.
Her elbow struck his throat.
He collapsed without firing.
The second guard swung his rifle.
Alexis drove the syringe cap into the soft space between his fingers, then slammed his wrist against the wall.
The rifle clattered to the floor.
She caught it before it bounced.
The young guard at the door gasped.
Alexis aimed at him.
He froze.
His hands rose.
She did not shoot.
She looked at the key ring on his belt.
“Keys.”
His eyes went wide.
Hassan shouted from the hallway, “Shoot her!”
The young guard trembled.
Alexis’s voice stayed calm.
“Keys.”
He unclipped them and tossed them.
She caught the ring with one hand.
Then she backed into the shadows.
Hassan stepped into view, pistol drawn.
His face was twisted with rage.
“You think you can escape this place?”
Alexis held the rifle steady.
“No.”
That answer stopped him.
She tilted her head.
May you like
“I think you locked me exactly where I needed to be.”
