Chapter 1

The first mistake Commander Hassan made was thinking Alexis Reed had been dragged into his prison by accident.

The second was laughing in her face.

The corridor was narrow, dark, and made of cracked concrete.

Water dripped somewhere behind the walls.

A single yellow bulb flickered above a row of steel doors, throwing long shadows across the floor.

Two armed guards dragged Alexis between them.

Her boots scraped over the concrete.

Her uniform was torn.

Dirt streaked her sleeves.

One side of her mouth was split, and a thin line of blood ran down her chin.

Her hands were tied in front of her.

But her eyes were open.

Watching.

Counting.

Remembering.

Every door.

Every corner.

Every camera.

Every guard who carried his rifle too loosely.

The guards shoved her to her knees in front of Cell Four.

A dozen enemy soldiers gathered in the hallway.

They had come to watch.

To laugh.

To see the captured American medic break.

Commander Hassan stepped out from the shadows.

He was tall, clean-uniformed, and smiling like a man who believed fear belonged to everyone but him.

He stopped in front of Alexis and looked down at her.

“One American medic,” he said, loud enough for all his men to hear, “won’t last a week here.”

The hallway erupted in laughter.
