Chapter 9

Price was taken away without another word.

His trial would come later.

His name would be stripped from command boards.

His career would end in disgrace.

And every report he had touched would be reopened.

Including Grey Ridge.

Three weeks later, Cassidy stood on a quiet hill at Arlington.

A small group gathered around a headstone that had waited too long for the truth.

Daniel Hayes.

Beloved son.

Devoted soldier.

Overwatch.

That last word had been added that morning.

Cassidy placed a folded patch at the base of the stone.

Mercer stood beside her, hat in his hands.

“I read the corrected report,” he said softly.

Cassidy kept her eyes on the name.

“Then you know he was there.”

“Yes,” Mercer said. “And because he was there, men lived.”

Cassidy nodded once.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

This time, she let it.

Colonel Holt stood a few steps behind them.

He did not interrupt.

Some moments belonged to the living.

Some belonged to the dead.

Cassidy touched the stone.

“They finally wrote you down,” she whispered.

The wind moved through the grass.

For the first time in eighteen months, the silence did not feel like denial.

It felt like peace.

A month later, Cassidy returned to duty.

Not as a rumor.

Not as a ghost.

Not as an unnamed voice on a forbidden channel.

Her new orders were printed in black and white.
