Chapter 1

The SEAL team was already dead.
They just didn’t know it yet.
Four men moved through the dry canyon under a white desert sun, boots silent on loose stone, rifles raised, eyes searching the rocks ahead.
To them, the valley looked empty.
To Cassidy Walker, it looked like a grave with the lid still open.
She lay high above them in a strip of dead grass, her face covered in dust, her body pressed so flat against the mountain that even the wind seemed to pass over her without noticing.
Her sniper rifle rested against her shoulder.
Her finger stayed outside the trigger guard.
Her right eye stared through the scope.
And through that circle of glass, she saw everything command had missed.
A machine gun tucked behind a broken ridge.
Two armed men crawling along the left shelf.
A third shadow behind a boulder.
And farther up, half-hidden by heat shimmer, a man lifting an RPG onto his shoulder.
Cassidy’s jaw tightened.
The SEALs were walking straight into a kill box.
She touched the radio at her collar.
“SEAL One,” she whispered, “you’re walking into an ambush.”
The lead operator stopped so fast the man behind him almost ran into his back.
All four SEALs dropped behind rock.
Rifles swung outward.
One of them looked up toward the cliffs, searching for the voice.
He saw nothing.
Nobody ever saw Cassidy unless she wanted them to.
The radio crackled.
A male voice came through, low and sharp.
“Identify yourself.”
Cassidy didn’t answer right away.
Her scope stayed locked on the enemy machine gun team.
One man was feeding the belt.
Another was lowering himself behind the weapon.
They were waiting for the SEALs to take six more steps.
Six steps.

That was all.
