Chapter 10

On her first day, a young sniper student asked her the question everyone was too nervous to ask.

“Ma’am, how do you know when to take the shot?”

Cassidy looked across the range.

She thought about the canyon.

The RPG gunner.

The SEALs behind the rocks.

The man in the American uniform she refused to shoot because the risk was wrong.

Then she answered.

“You don’t shoot because you’re angry.”

The students listened.

“You don’t shoot because someone doubts you.”

Her hand rested lightly on the rifle beside her.

“You shoot when not shooting would cost an innocent life.”

No one spoke.

Cassidy looked toward the distant hills, where the sun was dropping gold across the dust.

For years, men like Major Price had tried to erase people from maps, from reports, from memory.

But the truth had survived on a mountain.

In a scope.

Through one calm voice that refused to go quiet.

And from that day forward, when a SEAL team heard an unknown woman on the radio telling them to stay down, nobody asked if she belonged there.

They listened.

Because some names are not missing from the map by accident.

Some are hidden because they are the only thing standing between soldiers and the ambush waiting ahead.

ENDING QUESTION:

What would you have done if command said the person saving your life didn’t even exist?
