Chapter 4 - Silas Comes to the Diner

Silas Mercer came into the diner three nights after Isabella died.

Lydia knew him before he spoke.

Not from his face.

From the way the room changed.

Two men entered first.

Then Silas.

Gray suit.

Calm smile.

Dead eyes.

He sat in Lydia’s section and ordered tea.

No one ordered tea at that diner at two in the morning.

Lydia’s hands shook as she poured it.

Silas watched her closely.

“You worked the night Mrs. Romano came in.”

Lydia nearly dropped the pot.

“I work every night.”

“That’s not an answer.”

She looked toward the cook.

He was pretending not to listen.

No help there.

Silas placed a fifty-dollar bill on the table.

“She was upset. Grief does strange things to people.”

Lydia said nothing.

Silas smiled.

“If she left anything here, it should be returned to the family.”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

His smile remained.

But the room felt colder.

“Lydia Hart. Younger brother, Jamie. Surgery last year. Queens apartment. Landlord threatening eviction.”

Her blood went cold.

Silas stirred tea he never drank.

“People like you think honesty protects you. It doesn’t. It only makes you predictable.”

Lydia backed away.

“I have tables.”

Silas leaned back.

“If Isabella gave you something, you will regret keeping it.”

That night, Lydia moved the necklace from the coffee tin to a seam inside her winter coat.

The next morning, the diner manager fired her.

He said a customer complained.

He would not say who.

For weeks, Lydia disappeared into small jobs.

Cleaning offices.

Catering events.

Anything paid in cash.

She called Marco Bellini three times.

No answer.

On the fourth try, his assistant said he was traveling.

On the fifth, the line disconnected.

Lydia began to think Isabella had chosen wrong.

Then she received a letter with no return address.

Inside was one sentence.

Wear it only when the room is full.

No signature.

But tucked into the envelope was a copy of Isabella’s handwritten initials.

I.R.

Lydia understood.

Marco had received some message.

Maybe delayed.

Maybe secret.

Maybe he had been waiting for the same date Isabella named.

October 14.

The night of Aurelia’s anniversary gala.

The night Vincent Romano would dine there with half the city watching.

Lydia got hired at Aurelia two weeks before the gala.

Not because she wanted danger.

Because she needed money.

And because Isabella’s final request had become heavier than fear.

On the night of the gala, Lydia wore the necklace hidden beneath her uniform.

She planned to find Marco.

Hand him the proof.

Leave.

But fate is cruel with timing.

A drunk guest knocked a glass tray from her hands.

Crystal shattered.

Wine spilled.

Her collar shifted.

The sapphire caught the chandelier light.

Across the room, Vincent Romano saw it.

And grief moved faster than reason.

👉 Vincent thought he had found a thief, but Silas knew the necklace meant Isabella’s dead-man file had just been activated.
