Chapter 3 - The Folder With My Name

I didn’t sleep.

While Emily rested, I sat in the driver’s seat staring at the photo.

The folder bothered me.

Not because my name was on it.

Because Margaret had spent years telling me family should never hide things.

Yet she had hidden something from me.

The next morning, I contacted the person who sent the message.

A woman answered.

“Daniel, my name is Vanessa’s assistant.”

I almost hung up.

Then she said something that stopped me.

“I quit because I couldn’t watch what they were doing anymore.”

She explained Margaret and Vanessa had been planning for months.

The Christmas dinner wasn’t about family.

It was about forcing Emily to leave.

Why?

Because Emily had discovered financial records.

Records involving my family company.

I looked at my wife.

She had never mentioned any of this.

When I asked her, she looked shocked.

“I thought you knew.”

“Knew what?”

She reached into her purse.

And pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this in your mother’s office.”

Inside was a copy of a bank transfer.

A large one.

Sent to Vanessa.

The note attached made my blood run cold.
