Chapter 4 - Dominic’s Black Mug

Dominic’s black mug sat beside the coffee machine every morning.
Everyone knew not to touch it.
It was ridiculous.
A glossy ceramic mug engraved with silver initials.
D.V.
Valerie once made an intern cry for using it by accident.
“Do you think anything here is yours?” she asked.
The intern apologized for three days.
Audrey noticed.
Objects reveal hierarchies.
A chair.
A door.
A mug.
The black mug was not about coffee.
It was about territory.
On the morning of the slap, Audrey moved it.
Not far.
Six inches.
From the executive shelf to the counter beside the espresso machine.
Then she placed her red thermos next to it.
Valerie entered the pantry five minutes later.
She saw the thermos first.
Then the mug.
Then Audrey.
Her face changed.
“You.”
Audrey looked up calmly.
“Good morning.”
Valerie picked up the black mug.
“Why is this here?”
“It was beside the machine.”
“This is Dominic’s.”
Audrey tilted her head.
“Yes?”
Valerie stepped closer.
“You think you’re cute?”
“I think it’s a mug.”
That was the line.
The entire pantry felt the temperature change.
Employees stopped pouring coffee.
Someone near the refrigerator froze with a yogurt cup in hand.
Dominic walked in at the worst possible moment.
Or the best.
“Val,” he said quickly. “Not here.”
Audrey looked at him.
Val.
Not Valerie.
Too intimate.
Too automatic.
Her phone was already recording in her pocket.
Valerie heard his tone and took it as betrayal.
“Not here?” she repeated. “So she can touch your things and I say nothing?”
Dominic lowered his voice.
“Stop.”
That made Valerie angrier.
Because controlling women who control through access hate being corrected in front of the people they intimidate.
“She needs to learn boundaries,” Valerie snapped.
Audrey reached for her red thermos.
Not Dominic’s mug.
Hers.
Valerie saw the movement and lost the thread.
She snatched the thermos, coffee sloshing from the open lid.
Audrey reached to steady it.
Valerie slapped her.
Hard.
Coffee splattered.
The pantry gasped.
And Dominic said the name that shattered the disguise.
“Audrey—”
He stopped immediately.
Too late.
Audrey blinked coffee from her eyes.
Valerie stared.
“What did you call her?”
Dominic said nothing.
Audrey slowly opened her eyes.
“You sure about that?”
Then she stopped the recording.
Valerie’s face drained when she saw the file name.
Executive Floor Recording.
“What did you record?”
Audrey looked toward the camera.
“Enough.”
Dominic lunged forward.
Not touching her.
He knew better now.
But panic made his voice crack.
“Audrey, listen to me.”
The employees heard it.
Every one of them.
Audrey.
Not Sophia.
The new assistant was not new.
The CEO knew her.
And his mistress had just assaulted her in front of witnesses.
That was when Chloe got the file.
That was when security locked the floor.
May you like
That was when Dominic’s black mug stopped being a symbol of power and became an exhibit.
👉 Audrey used Dominic’s own office rituals against him, and one coffee mug made Valerie expose the relationship he had spent months denying.
