Chapter 1 - The Slap in the Pantry

The coffee hit Audrey’s face before the slap did.
Hot brown drops splashed across her ivory silk blouse, her cheek, and the front strands of her hair.
Then Valerie’s hand cracked across her face.
The entire executive pantry went silent.
Audrey staggered one step back, still gripping the red thermos in her right hand. Her employee badge swung against her chest.
Sophia Brooks
Executive Assistant
Behind Valerie, nearly twenty employees stood frozen near the glass walls, coffee cups in hand, mouths half-open.
Dominic Vale, CEO of Meridian Crest, stood by the espresso machine in his gray suit with both hands on his head.
His face had gone white.
Valerie Crane stood in front of Audrey in a burgundy dress, breathing hard, diamonds flashing at her ears, eyes burning with possession.
“Keep your hands off what’s mine,” Valerie hissed.
Audrey blinked slowly.
Coffee ran from her chin onto her blouse.
Her cheek burned.
But she did not cry.
She opened her eyes and looked directly at Valerie.
Then at Dominic.
Then back at Valerie.
“You sure about that?”
Valerie’s nostrils flared.
“Excuse me?”
Audrey slid one hand into the pocket of her beige skirt and tapped her phone screen.
The audio recording stopped.
The display lit up.
Executive Floor Recording
Saved
Valerie saw it.
Her anger shifted into alarm.
“What did you record?”
Audrey placed the phone on the counter beside Dominic’s black mug.
The mug had his initials engraved in silver.
D.V.
Dominic took one step toward her.
“Audrey—”
She looked at him.
He stopped.
Because he had just said the wrong name.
The badge said Sophia.
But Dominic knew Audrey.
And now everyone else knew he knew her too.
Audrey wiped coffee from her chin with the back of her hand.
Then she looked past Valerie at the security camera in the ceiling corner.
“Chloe,” she said quietly, “open the folder.”
In the HR office two floors below, Chloe Park received the audio file on her laptop.
On her desk lay a black evidence folder already opened.
Contracts.
Screenshots.
Security stills.
Financial reports.
Copies of messages.
Chloe listened to ten seconds of the audio.
Her face went cold.
Then she picked up the phone.
“Lock the executive floor,” she said. “Now.”
Back in the pantry, Dominic’s breathing turned shallow.
Valerie stepped away from Audrey as if the coffee-splattered woman in front of her had suddenly become dangerous.
The glass doors opened.
Security entered first.
Then Chloe Park, HR director, carrying the black folder against her chest.
Dominic stared at it.
All the color left his face.
Audrey picked up her phone and set it beside his mug.
“Open the folder,” she said.
And for the first time that morning, the CEO realized the new assistant had never been there to serve coffee.

She had been there to catch him.
👉 Valerie thought she had slapped a powerless employee, but Audrey had been recording the executive floor since the moment Dominic called her by her real name.
