Chapter 11 - Audrey’s Real Name

Audrey returned the Sophia Brooks badge on a Friday.

She placed it on Chloe’s desk beside the red thermos.

The thermos still had a faint coffee stain near the lid.

Chloe looked at it.

“You’re keeping that?”

Audrey smiled.

“Evidence can be sentimental.”

Chloe leaned back.

“You were very calm that day.”

“No,” Audrey said. “I was angry.”

“You didn’t look angry.”

“I’m paid to look useful while men underestimate me.”

Chloe laughed once.

Then grew serious.

“Thank you.”

Audrey shook her head.

“Thank Lena.”

“I did.”

“Thank the people who spoke after.”

“I am.”

“Then thank yourself for finally breaking process.”

Chloe looked down.

“That’s not usually considered a compliment in HR.”

“It is when process protects the wrong person.”

They sat in silence for a moment.

Then Chloe opened a drawer and pulled out one printed photo.

A still from the pantry camera.

Not the slap.

Not Valerie’s hand.

The moment after.

Audrey standing straight, coffee on her blouse, phone in hand, eyes open.

Beside her, employees watching.

Chloe said, “Lena asked for a copy. She said it helped her.”

Audrey looked at the photo.

She did not like seeing herself that way.

Hurt.

Still.

Exposed.

But she understood why Lena wanted it.

There are moments when one person staying upright gives others permission to stop shrinking.

Audrey took the photo.

“Tell her I’ll sign it like a celebrity.”

Chloe smiled.

“Please don’t.”

Audrey left Meridian Crest through the front lobby under her real name.

Not Sophia.

Audrey Hale.

Outside, rain had started.

She stood under the awning and opened a message from Lena.

You okay?

Audrey typed back:

Cheek healed. Blouse did not.

Lena replied:

Frame it.

Audrey laughed.

Then looked back at the building.

She thought about how many women had walked out of that lobby with boxes, shame, and stories no one wanted to hear.

This time, the wrong people had walked out.

Not all of them.

No company becomes clean overnight.

But the executive floor had learned something.

Assistants are not furniture.

HR files are not graveyards.

Mistresses with borrowed power are not untouchable.

And CEOs who let other people do their cruelty for them are still responsible for the hand that swings.

Audrey opened her umbrella and walked into the rain.

Her next case would come soon.

There was always another company.

Another powerful man.

Another woman everyone thought would stay quiet.

But for one Friday afternoon, Audrey allowed herself to feel the victory.

Not loud.

Not perfect.

May you like

Real.

👉 Audrey returned the fake badge, but the woman Valerie slapped had left behind a company that could no longer pretend the abuse was invisible.
