Chapter 5 - THE DOCTOR WHO NEVER TREATED HER

Police separated everyone inside the mansion.
Paramedics examined Eleanor on the living-room sofa.
She had bruising along both arms, dehydration, and dangerously low levels of prescribed medication in her blood.
Elena had a cut near her hairline and swelling around one shoulder.
Vanessa claimed Elena attacked first.
The hidden footage showed the opposite.
Daniel watched the clip in which Vanessa raised the mop.
Elena stepped between her and Eleanor.
Vanessa swung.
The mop struck Elena’s shoulder.
Eleanor tried to stand, slipped on the water Vanessa had poured across the floor, and fell.
Grant had left the house nine minutes earlier.
Phone records showed Vanessa called him immediately after Daniel entered.
Detective Nora Blake arrived with a financial-crimes officer.
Daniel handed her access to the private server.
“Preserve everything.”
Blake ordered officers to secure the sewing room.
Vanessa moved toward the hallway.
“My personal belongings are upstairs.”
“You will remain here.”
“The blue box contains stolen property.”
Detective Blake looked at her.
“How do you know what it contains?”
Vanessa realized her mistake.
Elena had mentioned only the box.
Not its contents.
Daniel entered the sewing room with an officer.
The blue wooden box sat inside a cabinet behind folded fabric.
Its top tray contained thread, buttons, and needles.
Beneath it was the false bottom.
Inside were Eleanor’s notes, Elena’s incident log, copies of the trust, a memory card, and an unopened envelope addressed to Daniel.
The final item was a prescription bottle.
The label carried Eleanor’s name.
The pills inside did not match the prescription.
A toxicologist later identified them as sedatives.
Daniel opened the letter.
Son,
If you are reading this, Vanessa has either taken the house or failed.
Eleanor explained the missing medicine, locked doors, false doctor, and forced signatures.
She also named Grant.
Vanessa’s brother had been opening shell companies and preparing property transfers.
The bank meeting was scheduled for Friday morning.
It was Thursday.
Detective Blake contacted the bank and ordered a temporary hold.
Daniel stopped her.
“Can we trace where they planned to send the money?”
Blake studied him.
“You want the transaction monitored.”
“I want every account.”
The detective agreed only if no real funds moved and Eleanor’s safety remained protected.
A controlled financial operation was prepared.
Vanessa and Grant would be allowed to believe the medical declaration and temporary trustee documents remained undiscovered.
But first, police needed evidence connecting Dr. Pike.
He arrived at the mansion while officers were still present.
Vanessa had called him before Daniel took her phone.
Pike carried a medical bag and a prewritten emergency commitment form.
He claimed Eleanor needed immediate psychiatric hospitalization.
Detective Blake asked when he last examined her.
“Yesterday.”
The hidden footage showed he had not entered the house for nine days.
Pike changed his answer.
He said Vanessa updated him remotely.
Then he saw Daniel holding the blue box.
His face went pale.
Inside Eleanor’s notes was a copy of a check payable to Dr. Stephen Pike.
