Chapter 9 - The Emergency Hearing From the Hospital Bed

The hearing happened from Claire’s hospital bed.

Her blood pressure was still too high.

The baby was being monitored.

Eleanor sat on one side of the bed.

Marissa sat on the other.

A nurse stood near the monitor, watching Claire more closely than the lawyers.

Nathan appeared on video from a small police interview room with his attorney beside him.

His suit was wrinkled now.

His hair was no longer perfect.

But he still tried to look like the reasonable one.

“Your Honor,” his attorney began, “Mr. Blackwell is deeply concerned that his pregnant wife has been emotionally overwhelmed by a stranger who entered his home under false pretenses and now claims to be her biological mother.”

Claire’s hand tightened over the blanket.

Eleanor’s expression stayed calm, but Claire felt the anger radiating from her.

The judge looked tired and sharp.

“We will address all parties. First, I want medical status.”

The doctor spoke.

“Claire Blackwell is experiencing stress-induced hypertension with contractions. The fetus is viable but being monitored closely. Further emotional escalation is medically dangerous.”

The judge’s eyes moved to Nathan on the screen.

“Then everyone will keep their voice controlled.”

Nathan nodded sadly, performing concern.

Claire used to fall for that face.

Now she saw the effort behind it.

Marissa played the dining room video.

The judge watched Victoria point in Claire’s face.

Watched Brianna grab her hair.

Watched Nathan stand there.

Watched Eleanor step in.

Nathan’s attorney argued, “Mr. Blackwell did not touch his wife.”

Marissa answered, “He filed for pre-birth medical authority hours before the assault, brought legal papers to dinner, and stood by while his family physically humiliated her. Participation does not require his hand in her hair.”

Claire closed her eyes.

The judge asked, “Mrs. Blackwell, are you able to speak?”

Claire nodded.

Eleanor leaned closer.

“You don’t have to.”

Claire whispered, “I want to.”

The screen blurred for a second through her tears.

Then she spoke.

“Nathan told me I had no one. His mother said I was nothing in their house. His sister pulled my hair while I held my stomach. And Nathan watched.”

Nathan leaned forward.

“Claire, I was shocked. I froze.”

Claire looked at him.

“No. I froze. You waited.”

The room went still.

Claire continued.

“He filed papers to take my baby before the dinner. He never told me. He deleted my lab emails. He knew Eleanor might be my mother before I did.”

Nathan’s face twitched.

The judge looked at Marissa.

“Evidence?”

Marissa submitted the lab access logs, email backups, guardianship draft, and Nathan’s petition.

Then Eleanor spoke.

“I did enter the home under false pretenses. I did it because private investigators found evidence that my biological daughter was being isolated and coerced while pregnant. I will answer for that method if the court requires it.”

She looked directly at the judge.

“But I will not apologize for reaching her before they finished breaking her.”

Claire began crying.

The judge took several minutes to review the emergency filings.

Nathan stared at Claire the whole time.

When the judge returned, her ruling was immediate.

Nathan’s pre-birth petition was denied.

Claire retained sole medical decision-making authority for herself and the unborn child.

Nathan was barred from the hospital pending further order.

Victoria and Brianna were also barred.

The court ordered preservation of all Blackwell communications, lab records, and household security footage.

Nathan exploded.

“She’s my wife!”

The judge’s voice hardened.

“Then you should have protected her like one.”

The screen cut.

Claire turned her face toward Eleanor.

The baby’s heartbeat continued steady on the monitor.

May you like

For the first time all night, Claire breathed.

👉 Claire won protection in court, but the final proof of Nathan’s plan was still hidden inside the nursery at the Blackwell mansion.
