Chapter 10 - The Nursery With No Crib

The police searched the Blackwell mansion the next morning.

Claire watched by video from her hospital bed.

She had not slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she felt Brianna’s fist in her hair.

Every time she touched her stomach, she heard Victoria say vessel.

Eleanor stayed beside her through the night.

No speeches.

No pressure.

Just presence.

At ten in the morning, Marissa entered with a tablet.

“They’re entering the nursery now.”

Claire swallowed hard.

“I don’t want to see.”

Eleanor reached for the tablet.

“We can turn it off.”

Claire shook her head.

“No. I need to know.”

On the screen, an officer opened the nursery door.

Claire’s heart dropped.

The room was almost empty.

The crib was gone.

The rocking chair was gone.

The shelves were bare.

The tiny cream blankets she had folded herself were missing.

Only the painted clouds on the wall remained.

Claire pressed one hand over her mouth.

Eleanor’s eyes filled with rage.

“They emptied it,” Claire whispered.

Marissa’s voice was gentle.

“They moved items into storage three days ago.”

Claire looked at her.

“Before the dinner.”

“Yes.”

The officer on the video opened the closet.

Inside was a stack of boxes labeled:

BLACKWELL INFANT PROPERTY.

Claire stared at the words.

Infant property.

Not clothes.

Not nursery.

Property.

The officer removed a laptop from the top shelf.

Then a folder from behind the closet panel.

Marissa leaned closer to the screen.

“That’s it.”

“What?” Claire asked.

“The original custody plan.”

The documents were scanned and sent to the hospital within the hour.

Marissa reviewed them first.

Her face hardened more with every page.

Eleanor stood behind her.

“What did he do?”

Marissa looked at Claire carefully.

“He prepared a post-delivery petition claiming you were psychologically unstable due to foster care trauma and sudden identity confusion.”

Claire went numb.

“Identity confusion?”

“He planned to argue that Eleanor’s appearance made you delusional and unsafe around the baby.”

Eleanor whispered, “He planned to use me against you.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

Marissa continued.

“There is also a draft statement for Victoria. She was going to say you became aggressive during dinner and Brianna tried to restrain you.”

Claire almost laughed.

A broken, disbelieving sound.

“They were going to say I attacked them?”

“Yes.”

Eleanor took the page and read silently.

Then she turned it around.

At the bottom was Nathan’s handwritten note.

Need footage edited before filing.

Claire’s stomach twisted.

The video Brianna filmed.

They had planned to edit out the hair pull.

Keep only Claire crying.

Claire shaking.

Claire looking unstable.

Nathan had turned even her humiliation into a future exhibit.

The doctor entered just as Claire’s breathing changed.

“Claire?”

“I’m okay,” Claire said automatically.

Eleanor leaned in.

“No, sweetheart. You don’t have to say that anymore.”

Claire looked at her.

Then broke.

“I’m not okay.”

Eleanor took her hand.

“I know.”

Claire sobbed.

“He was going to take my baby.”

Eleanor’s voice trembled.

“He failed.”

Marissa placed the documents into evidence.

“With this, we can seek a full protective order, emergency divorce protections, and criminal investigation into fraud and coercion.”

Claire wiped her tears.

“What about the baby’s things?”

Eleanor looked at her.

“We’ll get them back.”

Claire shook her head slowly.

“No.”

Eleanor paused.

Claire looked toward the fetal monitor.

“I don’t want anything from that house in my child’s room.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Then we start fresh.”

Outside the room, a nurse smiled.

“We have good news,” she said. “Baby’s heartbeat is strong.”

Claire closed her eyes.

May you like

After everything Nathan had done, that tiny heartbeat still sounded like a future.

👉 Nathan’s hidden plan was exposed, but Claire had to decide whether she wanted to rebuild her life as a Blackwell, a Whitmore, or someone entirely her own.
