Chapter 8 - The Ambulance Ride With a Stranger Mother

Claire had never ridden in an ambulance with someone holding her hand.
As a foster child, she learned hospitals were places where adults signed forms and left.
As Nathan’s wife, she learned hospitals were places where Victoria gave instructions and Claire was expected to nod.
Now Eleanor sat beside her in the ambulance, still wearing the maid uniform with diamond rings on her bare hands.
One hand held Claire’s.
The other pressed gently against the blanket over Claire’s knees.
The siren wailed.
The medic checked the fetal monitor.
Claire tried to breathe slowly, but panic climbed her ribs.
“I don’t know you,” she whispered.
Eleanor’s face twisted with pain.
“I know.”
“But I want you here.”
Eleanor squeezed her hand.
“Then I’m here.”
Claire turned her head toward her.
“Did you really look for me?”
Eleanor let out a shaky breath.
“Every birthday. Every Christmas. Every time a girl with brown hair turned around in a grocery store and I thought, maybe.”
Claire cried silently.
“I thought my mother left me.”
“No.”
“I thought nobody came.”
“I came until they told me there was nowhere left to go. Then I kept coming anyway.”
The medic glanced at them but said nothing.
Claire closed her eyes.
“What happened?”
Eleanor’s voice trembled.
“You were born at St. Agnes Medical Center. Healthy. Loud. Furious at the world.”
A tiny smile moved through Claire’s tears.
“That sounds like me.”
“It was perfect,” Eleanor whispered. “I held you for nine hours. Then they took you for a hearing test. A nurse came back and said there had been a respiratory event. Then a doctor. Then a chaplain.”
Claire’s throat tightened.
“They said I died?”
“Yes.”
Eleanor looked out the ambulance window.
“Years later, we learned the nurse was using a false identity. The infant records were altered. The body they cremated was never properly identified.”
Claire covered her mouth.
“Why?”
“Money. Adoption trafficking. Private buyers. We still don’t know every name.”
Claire’s eyes widened.
“I was sold?”
Eleanor’s face broke.
“You were stolen.”
The word hung between them.
Stolen.
Not unwanted.
Not abandoned.
Stolen.
Claire’s body shook with another wave of pain.
The medic adjusted the monitor.
“Baby’s heartbeat is reacting. We’re close.”
Eleanor leaned in.
“Stay with me, Claire.”
Claire gripped her hand.
“I don’t know if I can call you Mom.”
Eleanor nodded quickly, tears falling.
“You don’t have to.”
“I don’t want to hurt you.”
“You are my child,” Eleanor said. “You surviving is not hurting me.”
Claire sobbed once.
That sentence entered a place no one had touched before.
At the hospital, nurses rushed her into labor and delivery triage.
Eleanor stayed until a doctor stopped her at the door.
“Immediate family only,” the nurse said.
Claire panicked.
“She’s my mother.”
The words came out before Claire fully understood them.
Eleanor froze.
The nurse stepped aside.
Eleanor followed.
Behind them, Marissa arrived with legal documents, police officers, and the phone recording from the dining room.

And across town, Nathan’s attorney filed an emergency motion from a holding room, claiming Claire had been kidnapped by a stranger claiming to be her mother.
👉 Claire finally called Eleanor her mother, but Nathan used that same bond to accuse Eleanor of manipulating her.
