PART 6: Rachel Breaks

PART 6: Rachel Breaks

The police did not arrest Daniel right away.

That was the worst part.

They questioned.

They reviewed.

They spoke in careful legal language while Daniel stood near the wall pretending to be offended instead of afraid.

Audrey watched him from her wheelchair.

She knew that look now.

He was waiting.

Waiting for someone to doubt her.

Waiting for paperwork to slow things down.

Waiting for his money, his charm, or his last name to open a door.

But Rachel was unraveling.

She sat with both hands over her pregnant stomach, rocking slightly, her stolen coat folded across her lap like it burned her skin.

Daniel kept glancing at her.

Warning her.

Silencing her without words.

Catherine noticed.

General Mercer noticed.

Audrey noticed most.

She had spent years learning Daniel’s moods. The tiny jaw movement before he lied. The soft voice before he threatened. The way he smiled at people he hated.

Rachel had not learned those things yet.

She still thought love and fear were separate.

Audrey knew better.

“Rachel,” Audrey said quietly.

Rachel looked up.

Her eyes were wet and terrified.

Audrey did not soften her voice for her.

“You wanted my husband. You wanted my home. You wore my coat while my babies were fighting to breathe.”

Rachel sobbed once.

“I know.”

Daniel snapped, “Don’t talk to her.”

Audrey ignored him.

“But if you know something about my children, say it now.”

Rachel shook her head.

“I can’t.”

General Mercer stepped forward.

“You can.”

Daniel laughed.

“She’s unstable. She’s pregnant. This is harassment.”

Rachel looked at Audrey’s twins.

Ava’s tiny fingers moved against the blanket.

Lucas made a small sound that barely reached the air.

Something inside Rachel broke.

“He has another lawyer,” she whispered.

Daniel went still.

Catherine’s eyes sharpened.

“What lawyer?”

Rachel wiped her face with the sleeve of Audrey’s coat.

“A private adoption attorney. Not for adoption exactly. For guardianship. Daniel said if Audrey was declared medically unstable after delivery, he could petition for emergency control of the babies’ medical decisions.”

Audrey’s heart slammed against her ribs.

Catherine’s voice dropped.

“Who signed the medical instability statement?”

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“He said he had a doctor.”

The hospital administrator turned sharply.

“What doctor?”

Daniel shouted, “Enough.”

Rachel flinched.

Audrey did not.

She leaned forward despite the pain tearing through her abdomen.

“What was he going to do with my babies?”

Rachel covered her mouth.

Daniel lunged toward her, but the police officer blocked him.

Rachel cried harder.

“He said the twins made you powerful. He said people would pity you. He said if he controlled the babies, you would sign anything.”

Audrey’s fingers curled around the incubator rail.

The room seemed to tilt again.

Daniel had not wanted custody because he loved Ava and Lucas.

He wanted leverage.

Two premature babies as bargaining chips.

General Mercer’s face went white with rage.

Catherine pulled out her phone.

“I need an emergency judge on call now.”

The hospital administrator spoke into her radio.

“Lock down all neonatal records. Suspend Mr. Bennett’s access. Flag all discharge, transfer, and guardianship documents.”

Daniel was breathing fast now.

“You can’t do this.”

Audrey stared at him.

“You were going to take them from me.”

He looked at her like she was finally seeing him clearly.

Then, softly enough that only those closest heard, he said, “I was going to take everything.”

Audrey’s pain vanished beneath something colder.

Catherine’s phone connected.

The attorney stepped away, speaking rapidly.

Rachel looked at Audrey.

“I’m sorry.”

Audrey’s eyes did not move from Daniel.

“No,” she said. “You’re scared.”

Rachel lowered her head.

Daniel smiled, cruel even now.

“You think this saves you, Audrey? You’re still weak. You’re still in that chair.”

Audrey slowly looked up at him.

Behind her, her grandfather stood in uniform.

Beside her, Catherine held the law in her hands.

In front of her, her babies breathed.

Audrey wiped her tears with the back of her hand.

“I’m in this chair,” she said, “because I brought two lives into this world.”

Then she looked at the officers.

May you like

“Get him away from them.”

👉 Daniel’s real plan was finally exposed, but the judge’s emergency ruling would decide whether Audrey could protect her babies before he struck again.
